Tom Hanks on Reuniting With ‘Forrest Gump’ Co-Star Robin Wright For New Movie ‘Here’: “Can You Believe This?”

As a long-time admirer of Tom Hanks’ illustrious career and a die-hard fan of his iconic roles, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film “Here.” The reunion of Hanks with Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis, after three decades since the release of “Forrest Gump,” feels like a magical throwback to the golden age of cinema.

Thirty years following the debut of “Forrest Gump,” Tom Hanks and Robin Wright reunite once more – joined by director Robert Zemeckis – for the film “Here.” This unique production is a continuous shot set within a single room, where it chronicles various family generations over time.

In the project, Tom Hanks and Rita Wright portray a couple whose bond unfolds over time. During the AFI Fest premiere in Los Angeles last Friday, Hanks shared that collaborating with Wright now feels just like it did back in the ’90s.

We’ve been repeating the same discussion multiple times; our paths have crossed occasionally. When we first sat down together on the initial day with our scripts to begin working, there was a sense of ‘Isn’t this unbelievable? How did this come about?’ According to Hanks in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that feeling has passed, and now we’re moving forward. We’re familiar with each other in every way, enjoying the comfort of knowing one another inside out, and having a strong bond of trust and affection.

When I initially joined this project, I had no idea Tom would be my scene partner; later on, Zemeckis began tossing around the notion, and I thought, “Now wouldn’t that be amazing!” Then came the question of availability and scheduling. After a flurry of discussions, we both agreed, “Yes, of course,” because when it comes to collaborating with someone as talented as Tom, there’s really no other answer.

Zemeckis stated that he didn’t initially have a detailed strategy for a Forrest Gump reunion, but was extremely fortunate that both stars agreed to participate. To follow the actors throughout the story spanning several decades, the team collaborated with AI studio Metaphysic, utilizing their tool called Metaphysic Live. This innovative tool employed face swaps and de-aging effects in real-time over the actors’ performances.

Zemeckis stated that the story’s telling was crucial; we couldn’t create the movie five years ago, but luckily, this tool became available just at the right time. Essentially, it was digital makeup, he explained. Moreover, this tool enabled the cast to see themselves younger during filming, instead of waiting for post-production effects. He noted, ‘They react by saying, “I need to move more swiftly, I have to be more agile, I have to speak up a bit.” It was essential for them to observe this transformation.’

Here hits theaters on Nov. 1.
