As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous cinematic endeavors, I must say that the news about the demise of the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Splinter Cell leaves me with a heavy heart. Having grown up playing the games, the idea of seeing Tom Hardy embody the stealthy persona of Sam Fisher on the big screen was nothing short of exhilarating. Alas, it seems that the elusive perfection they were striving for was just out of reach.
As a devoted enthusiast of the pulsating action game series, Splinter Cell, I must confess a pang of disappointment upon hearing the latest news about the long-awaited live-action adaptation. It appears that the project, which had been entrusted to the talented actor known for his role in ‘Venom’ and boasting an Oscar nomination, has been indefinitely halted. The unfortunate truth is that production simply couldn’t crack the code to bring this cherished franchise to life on the big screen as intended. This sobering revelation was shared by producer Basil Iwanyk, who has been associated with the Splinter Cell movie since 2013.
Fans of the game “Splinter Cell” would have been thrilled to see Tom Hardy portray the rough, elite black-ops agent on the big screen. Regrettably, it seems this won’t occur as Iwanyk has added fuel to the fire by describing the proposed movie as “intense and amazing.
The film we were working on would have been incredible, if only we could have nailed the script and budget issues. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as planned, but it had immense potential. We had numerous versions in progress, all promising hard-hitting awesomeness. It’s one of those projects that slipped through our fingers, which is truly disappointing.
An Animated Adaptation of ‘Splinter Cell’ Is Coming to Netflix
The Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell video game franchise was launched as far back as 2002. This series introduces players to Sam Fisher, a character who engages in stealth operations as a black ops agent. Throughout the game, he undertakes risky missions while staying mostly unseen, utilizing night vision and thermal goggles to complete tasks effectively. The franchise has received widespread praise, become one of Ubisoft’s key franchises, and led to various spin-offs such as video games, books, comics, and other media.
Back in 2011, Tom Hardy, a highly acclaimed actor known for films such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, Venom: The Last Dance, and others, was reported to be taking the lead role in the Splinter Cell movie. Doug Liman, director of Edge of Tomorrow and Road House, signed on to direct the project in 2014, but he left in 2015. However, producer Eric Iwanyk assured fans in 2017 that the film was still in production. Unfortunately, recent developments have caused the live-action adaptation of Tom Hardy’s Splinter Cell to be put on hold, much like one of Fisher’s unfortunate victims.
Although it might take some time for Sam Fisher to appear in live-action, we’ve just received our initial glimpse into the anime adaptation of the highly-regarded game, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. This exciting venture by Netflix is what brings us this first peek at the upcoming animated series, and it also disclosed that Liev Schreiber, known for Ray Donovan and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, will lend his voice to the former U.S. Navy SEAL officer Sam Fisher.
Titled “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch,” this animated version of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is a joint production by Ubisoft Film & Television and animation studios Sun Creature and Fost. The series, helmed by directors Guillaume Dousse and Félicien Colmet-Daage, boasts “John Wick” writer Derek Kolstad as its head scribe. Although a specific release date has yet to be announced, the anticipation is building for its debut on a streaming platform in 2025.
