What stands out to me most about James Gunn’s DCU compared to many other pop culture franchises is the exceptional storytelling ability of acclaimed comic book writer Tom King. He penned the original work for Milly Alcock’s upcoming film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and is part of the main creative team behind HBO’s Lanterns series. However, it’s his latest comic adaptation that I find myself most eager for, surpassing any DC-related project.
Among the most intriguing, enigmatic, and perilous romantic stories across any platform, the comic book “Love Everlasting,” crafted by King and renowned artist Elsa Charretier, serves as a nostalgic homage to serializations from the golden age. At present, it’s still ongoing in its run with Image Comics, having released 15 issues thus far. However, executives at Sony Pictures didn’t hesitate to secure the series for a live-action film adaptation even before reaching its conclusion. Notably, there are already two talented individuals already involved in the production behind the scenes.
What Is Love Everlasting About?
Fundamentally, “Love Everlasting” is a satirical take on traditional romance stories, reminiscent of the movie “Groundhog Day”. The main character, Joan Peterson, repeatedly embarks on a quest to find her true love at the start of each episode. However, each seemingly promising encounter with a potential suitor ends unexpectedly and sometimes violently, compelling Joan to restart her search, even when she may not fully remember the previous events.
The story encompasses a wide range of genres and moods, spanning from classic love stories to gritty westerns, suspenseful thrillers, and terrifying horror tales. Each installment also features traditional comic book narrative devices, adding an intriguing layer to the plot that leaves me eager to discover how these elements will be translated for a film adaptation.
Room’s Lenny Abrahamson Is On Board To Direct
When it comes to narrating a complex tale, it often helps to have someone on board who already demonstrates skill in handling such stories. According to Deadline, Lenny Abrahamson, the director of the emotionally charged 2015 film “Room” and an Oscar nominee, has been selected to breathe life into Joan Peterson’s expansive love story.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating Abrahamson’s upcoming feature, marking his return to the big screen since the critically-acclaimed drama “The Little Stranger” in 2018. However, it’s important to note that he hasn’t been idle during this period. Instead, he’s delved into the realm of television, directing episodes for Hulu’s captivating series such as “Normal People,” where I was even honored with an Emmy nomination, and “Conversations with Friends,” another original production by Hulu.
I possess an innate ability to transform tales into unconventional and captivating mediums, so I’d be an ideal candidate to breathe life into the silver screen for the enchanting story of “Love Everlasting“.
X-Men And Kingsman Screenwriter Jane Goldman Is Writing Love Everlasting
Jane Goldman boasts a wealth of experience in crafting stories that span various genres, with a particular knack for adaptation projects. Her portfolio includes scriptwriting or co-scriptwriting for films like “Kick-Ass”, “The Kingsman”, and “X-Men: First Class”, which are based on comics, as well as adaptations of novels such as “The Woman in Black” by Susan Hill, “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier, and “The Limehouse Golum” by Peter Ackroyd. Goldman was also the writer behind the pilot episode for Naomi Watts’ abandoned “Game of Thrones” spinoff.
As a follower, I’m thrilled to share that I contributed to the script for a potential future project by Edgar Wright, titled “The Chain”. This crime thriller could serve as an exciting sequel to my upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man”, and also aligns perfectly with Sydney Sweeney’s long-awaited reboot of “Barbarella”. However, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to bring to life the captivating comic series by Tom King and Elsa Charretier before any of those projects materialize.
