Tomb Raider Anime Creator Explains Why The Legend of Lara Croft Is Animated

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a penchant for video games that span decades, I must say that my excitement for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is palpable! With the recent surge of successful video game adaptations, it’s refreshing to see a beloved franchise like Tomb Raider taking the animated route.

In the upcoming animated series titled “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft“, the renowned video game character Lara Croft is set to return on our screens once more. As video game adaptations gain popularity, this genre was once considered a risky venture by Hollywood, but now it’s the new trend as comic book movies find their footing after some challenging years. While shows like HBO’s “The Last of Us” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Fallout” have successfully translated video games into live-action settings, animated adaptations have been thriving for quite some time.

In an exclusive conversation with Tasha Huo, the brainchild behind “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” we delved into her approach to breathing life into the iconic video game heroine in this latest series. One question that intrigued us was her decision to transform the beloved “Tomb Raider” games into an animated series, given previous live-action adaptations featuring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Huo shared that animation offers a broader canvas for creators, not only due to the artistic liberties inherent in the medium, but also because of the financial constraints they often face. She elaborated by stating:

“Animation offers creators, especially those who are passionate about the franchise, a way to go all out in terms of scale, without needing the massive budget that a live-action adaptation would require. In other words, it provides us with the freedom to express our creativity.”

Huo added, “This gives us our cherished playground, dear fans, since it’s a less financially risky venture. It’s more budget-friendly to produce, and with fans now at the helm, the quality is outstanding. As a result, an increasing number of individuals are thinking, ‘I want to do the same! I want to tread in the footsteps of Arcane and Castlevania,’ don’t you agree?”

Prior to HBO making a breakthrough with live-action series like “The Last of Us,” Netflix had established itself as the leading platform for animated adaptations of video games. In addition to the upcoming series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” Netflix’s collection of animated game adaptations outshines others in the industry. Their first (and many argue, best) animated series based on a video game was “Castlevania,” which debuted in 2017. This series, inspired by the renowned Konami gaming franchise, presents a fresh narrative within the vampiric universe of the games. The original “Castlevania” ran for four seasons and is now continuing with its spin-off titled “Castlevania: Nocturne.”

Among the popular animated series of the streamer are “Arcane,” a show spun from “League of Legends” and “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” based on “Cyberpunk 2077.” Both shows have been cherished by fans and made significant impacts during their respective award seasons. In the year 2022, “Arcane” garnered an impressive four Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Animated Program. On the other hand, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” initially conceived as a promotional project for the video game, has soared in popularity to become the most acclaimed video game anime ever made. It even won the CrunchyRoll Anime of the Year Award in 2023. This success paves the way for the upcoming “Tomb Raider” series.
