Tony Etz, previously known for his role as an executive producer on television films featuring Brian Dennehy, passed away on Monday in Los Angeles following a prolonged struggle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his agency, and he was 64 years old.
Throughout his career at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which started in 1994 as a TV agent and culminated as co-head of packaging, Etz worked with writers, directors, actors, and producers. Notable shows he was associated with include “Lost”, “House”, “Big Little Lies”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Rescue Me”, “Brothers and Sisters”, “Band of Brothers”, and “Jackass”.

From 1994, Etz spent his career at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), where he began as a TV agent and ended up co-heading packaging. Throughout this period, he worked with writers, directors, actors, and producers on successful shows like “Lost”, “House”, “Big Little Lies”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Rescue Me”, “Brothers and Sisters”, “Band of Brothers”, and “Jackass”.
His surviving relatives consist of his wife, who he’s been married to for 25 years (Nancy Axelrode), his fellow CAA agent, and their son, Alex. Fresh out of the University of Michigan, Alex recently joined the agency’s mailroom staff, eager to work alongside his parents.
Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, Etz studied at Knox College, Illinois, where he was part of the student-led literary magazine, ‘Catch’. In the year 1983, he served as an editor for this publication that won the National Program Directors’ Prize from the Associated Writers and Writing Programs.
After graduating that year, he went on to attend a writers’ workshop at the University of Iowa, where he subsequently earned his master’s degree. Following this, he collaborated on the 1990 book titled “Off-Hollywood Movies: A Film Lover’s Guide“. Subsequently, he relocated to New York and California to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
He served as the main producer for three television films featuring Liam Neeson as Chicago police officer Jack Reed between 1992 and 1994, and also contributed to other TV movies that featured stars like Raquel Welch, Melissa Gilbert, Peter Horton, and Lisa Hartman.
In 2022, a distinguished alumnus from Knox College’s fourth generation, named Etz, was selected to serve as the chairman of the institution’s board of trustees.
In the previous academic year, our school introduced the Etz Family Institute for Cultivating Civic Leadership and Constructive Dialogue, a platform designed to equip students with skills to collaborate amidst diversity and engage in challenging conversations that foster enduring and beneficial transformation globally.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I’m truly saddened to say that our beloved school has lost one of its greatest advocates – a champion who not only represented the institution but also our community and its transformative education.
Tony, who served as chair of the committee responsible for my recruitment to Knox College in 2021, was one of the initial members I encountered within the Knox community. His ardor for the value of a liberal arts education was contagious, and it played a significant role in my choice to become part of this community. As a fourth-generation alumnus, Tony’s understanding of Knox College’s history was profound, and his leadership style – characterized by clarity, energy, and dedication to our mission – left an indelible impression.”
(Note: I tried to maintain the original meaning while using simpler words and more natural phrasing.)
He also served as an adjunct professor at USC since 2011.
Etz had a passion for exploring new places, immersing himself in books, and listening to lesser-known British pop groups, all while being an ardent supporter of the Chicago Cubs and holding multiple season tickets for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Survivors also include his siblings, David, Kathy and Sara.
As a heartfelt tribute to Tony Etz, consider making donations in his name to the Knox Fund. You can do this conveniently online at their website or via traditional mail at the Office of Advancement, Knox College, 2 E South St., Galesburg, IL 61401. Just remember to note that your gift is a tribute to Tony Etz.
