As a die-hard fan of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater since its inception 25 years ago, I can confidently say that my gaming and skateboarding lives have been intertwined thanks to this iconic series. It’s hard to believe it all started with just one game, but here we are, celebrating its silver anniversary.
Tony Hawk is confident that “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” has a bright future ahead, as he marks the game’s 25th anniversary.
Taking to Instagram to share a few words, Hawk posted a few behind-the-scenes clips of the beloved video game and wrote, “The original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was released exactly 25 years ago today. My intention and expectation for the game was mostly for the enjoyment of skateboarders. I had no idea it would transcend a niche market to become a massive success and – as some have argued – change the course of skateboarding’s popularity (and possibly even skate trick evolution). It definitely changed the course of my life, and is a big reason that I get to ride my skateboard for a living to this very day. And most of the featured characters are still out there ripping and representing skateboarding’s diversity in the best ways possible.”
He continued, “Seen here is a snippet of our motion capture session (from 411VM) during the development phase. I poured myself into every aspect of this project because I believed we were creating something exceptional, and I am immensely proud of the series that followed… and their soundtracks.” Hawk added, “Thanks to Activision, Neversoft (RIP) and all of you that played THPS in those formative years. I’m not supposed to tease anything else about the future of the series; but there will be a future.”
In June 2022, Birdman announced that the anticipated remasters for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 were no longer being developed because Activision had abandoned its plans for the games. He mentioned that these remasters were initially in development when 1 + 2 was released back in September 2020. Essentially, he stated that while he would like to share good news about ongoing projects, unfortunately, Vicarious Visions was disbanded and Activision is currently reorganizing, so it’s unclear what will happen next.
Stay tuned for more info on the future of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.
