Tony Todd Remembered by ‘Candyman’ Co-Star Virginia Madsen: “A Gentle Soul With a Deep Knowledge of the Arts”

As a long-time horror film enthusiast who grew up with the chilling tales of Candyman, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Tony Todd. Known for his captivating performances and iconic roles, he was more than just an actor to many fans – he was a legend, a master of the macabre, and a gentle soul who touched our hearts with his artistry.

I’m deeply saddened by the passing of the remarkable Tony Todd, my esteemed co-star in Candyman. His talent and warmth will forever be cherished in my memories.

The individual nominated for an Oscar, who portrayed graduate student Helen Lyle pursued by the title character’s hook-handed slayer in a 1992 horror movie set at a Chicago housing project while probing urban legends, honored Todd through a sequence of posts on Instagram.

Upon learning about Todd’s passing, Madsen first expressed her feelings through a short video message. In this message, she admitted that she was at a loss for words, yet she referred to Todd as her “cherished one.

Tony Todd, a remarkable actor, has passed away and ascended to heaven as an angel. Just as he was on earth, he will forever be cherished. I’ll share more thoughts soon, but for now, I am overwhelmed with emotion. Rest in peace, my friend.” (Paraphrased from Madsen’s original caption)

In the video, she shared that she “just found out” but “will say more about my beloved Candyman.”

Later on, she shared a more extensive message praising Todd, describing him as an exceptionally poetic individual whose speech could effortlessly induce romantic feelings.

Bernard Rose, the director of ‘Candyman’, played a significant role in helping us craft a gothic love story,” she penned. “That’s why the movie remains relevant. He was a kind-hearted individual with an extensive understanding of the arts.

Madsen also praised Todd for his interactions with strangers.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share that I reveled in the affection of my supporters and never felt inhibited when they sought me out for snapshots. Truly, I was one of the few actors graciously welcoming the limelight and public gaze.

She concluded by reminiscing about the film. “I’ll miss him deeply and secretly wish for a ghostly visit every now and then. However, I vow never to conjure him through a mirror!

Following his compliments towards Jordan Peele, who was both a co-writer and producer for the 2021 Nia DaCosta-directed sequel they both starred in, Madsen mentioned that conversations had taken place regarding the possibility of revealing additional aspects of their shared narrative.

She wrote that he suggested a prequel story, using modern technology, allowing us to narrate the story of their early romance. That’s an intriguing thought, and it is, my dear friend Tony.
