In response to a growing controversy surrounding sexual assault allegations, both the chairman Shuji Kano and president/CEO Koichi Minato of Fuji TV have stepped down. The scandal stems from a dinner in 2023, which Fuji TV is accused of organizing where a former member of the now-defunct pop idol group SMAP stands charged with assaulting a woman.
Kano and Minato made their resignations known at a press event held at the Fuji TV building in Tokyo on Monday, as confirmed by reports from the Associated Press.

Fuji Media Holdings, the company that owns Fuji TV, has initiated an autonomous investigation into the 2023 dinner where the popular TV host and ex-pop star, Nakai Masahiro, is accused of physically harming a woman. It’s also been reported that he later settled the matter privately.
The accusations surfaced in Japanese magazine articles published in December 2024, prompting the resignation of Shuji Kano as chairman and Koichi Minato as president of Fuji TV on Monday. This step came following an internal investigation at FMH, which was launched with assistance from external investigators.
Minato apologized at a Tokyo news conference on Monday, expressing regret for not being knowledgeable about human rights and corporate governance which led us to mishandle the case. Consequently, our actions towards the affected woman were insufficient. We deeply regret the damage done to our reputation.
FMH expressed their deep regret to their stakeholders over any inconveniences or worries triggered by recent news stories concerning their subsidiary, Fuji Television Network. The company has been experiencing a significant loss of viewers and advertisers following the expansion of a sexual assault scandal implicating Fuji TV, which is one of the largest television networks in another country.
FMH plans to delve into any potential connections between Fuji TV, FMH, and the “event” surrounding the 2023 dinner, as well as the likelihood of other similar occurrences, and whether there was a cover-up at Fuji TV following the alleged sexual assault, as some have suggested.
