‘Top Gun’ Star SHOCKED by Jon Hamm’s Advice!

Apart from the prominent leads in the movie “Top Gun: Maverick”, Tom Cruise’s sequel also showcased several promising supporting roles by emerging talents, who have undoubtedly grown since the film was released in 2022. One of these rising stars is Jack Schumacher, who has been active with his new Netflix series, “Ransom Canyon”, premiering on April 17th. MovieWeb recently had an opportunity to interview him for the promotion of this Western show, and during the conversation, Schumacher also reminisced about his time working on the “Top Gun” sequel – a notable achievement in his career.

He shared with us that his initial film was an entirely new experience for him, causing him to struggle with feelings of inadequacy, or impostor syndrome. As a result, he attempted to blend in on set, often feigning enthusiasm and saying things like, “I’m thrilled to be here!” This debut role was, nonetheless, an extraordinary learning opportunity for him as he absorbed everything around him. In addition to the Top Gun series, Jon Hamm was a notable addition, and Schumacher recounted a significant moment during the sequel’s filming.

At one point, I recollect having a chat with Jon. I asked him, “Hey, should I be doing something here? Should I try to make an impact?” He simply replied, “No.” He explained, “Your role at this moment… I’ve been in situations like this before. Your task now is to learn.” He emphasized, “Just listen. Everything will become clear later on.” That piece of advice has stayed with me, and it was a truly insightful lesson.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Cut a Lot of Lines

Due to having a large number of characters in the movie Top Gun: Maverick, certain scenes with supporting actors were eventually cut down. Some actors from the film have expressed their feelings about this, while director Schumacher provided his own perspective on these necessary edits and the overall experience:

Reflecting on my experience working alongside Tom, I must admit, I initially had only a handful of lines when I first got the part. Yet, with each new draft of the script that came my way, I found myself saying goodbye to more and more lines. It was during the reshoots where we reprised our roles, delivering our lines anew, that I couldn’t help but feel a tad disappointed.

Schumacher also pointed out that it was logical because, if, say three-quarters through the film, I were suddenly there and exclaimed, “We’re sitting ducks for enemy missiles!”, the audience might wonder, “Who is this?” or think, “We don’t know who he is.” Therefore, it makes sense that I would like to reprise my role in that universe again.

Currently, Schumacher will be delving into the intriguing character of Yancy in the upcoming Netflix series, “Ransom Canyon”. In the initial episodes, Yancy remains enveloped in mystery as he joins the titular town, leaving viewers eager to see more. According to Schumacher, he is thrilled about portraying such a fascinating figure. “He’s a man grappling with making the right decisions amidst his past haunting him and trying to move forward,” he shared. “Many people face this struggle in life, and I believe that’s what makes Yancy so relatable.
