As a gamer who’s been through the cassette tape era, the floppy disk days, and now the streaming revolution, I can truly appreciate the nostalgia that Toro y Moi is channeling with “Hole Erth.” Chaz Bear’s ability to weave personal experiences into his music has always resonated with me, and this album seems no exception. The collaboration with Ben Gibbard on “Hollywood” feels like a dream come true for any fan of the genre, while the ode to pre-streaming days in “CD-R” is a refreshing trip down memory lane.
Before “Hole Erth” arrives in about a month, Toro y Moi is maintaining the excitement leading up to its September release. Last month, they collaborated with Kevin Abstract and Lev on “Heaven,” and now they’ve released two fresh singles from the upcoming project: “Hollywood,” featuring Ben Gibbard, and “CD-R.”
For quite a while now, I’ve been an admirer of Ben’s music, so it seemed appropriate to include him in this album,” said Chaz Bear from Toro y Moi. Given that the album revolves around themes of tension and reminiscence, ‘Hollywood’ seemed like the ideal choice for its inclusion.
Referring to “CD-R,” the second track evokes nostalgic motifs, drawing inspiration from the era preceding digital streaming. In essence, this song is a tribute to the times when playlists were manually crafted rather than dictated by an algorithm.
The two fresh tracks have been added to the existing tunes “Heaven” and “Tuesday” on the album Hole Erth. This addition comes more than a year after Bear’s last Toro project, Sandhills, which was released in August 2023.
