‘Tracker,’ ‘Elsbeth’ Show Strong Multi-Platform Gains for CBS in Early Ratings Returns

As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a knack for binge-watching, I must say that the recent CBS lineup has been a delightful surprise! It feels like stepping into a time machine, transporting me back to the golden age of television when shows were not just about ratings but also about quality content.

Early returns on a number of CBS series show audiences finding them — in pretty large numbers.

It’s a small sample size, to be sure: The numbers below represent the first few weeks of the season (Sept. 15-Oct. 21), and most of the network’s scripted series premiered in the last of those weeks. In that timeframe, however, the premieres (and in a few cases, subsequent episodes) of eight CBS shows racked up audiences of more than 10 million viewers after a week of cross-platform viewing.

Out of those that have had multiple seasons, ‘Tracker’ (the highest-rated non-sports series last season) and ‘Matlock’ are showing impressive numbers for their new seasons. With an additional episode each, they currently boast an average viewership of 15.2 million for ‘Tracker’ and 13.2 million for ‘Matlock’, making them the most-watched programs on the network over a seven-day period.

Shows that surpassed 10 million viewers in their season or series premieres include FBI (11 million), Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (10.7 million), NCIS (10.5 million), Elsbeth (10.5 million), Fire Country (10.3 million) and Blue Bloods (10 million). These viewer numbers are derived from linear viewing, as measured by VideoAmp, during a contract dispute with Nielsen, and also include internal streaming data for Paramount+, CBS.com, and the CBS app.

Additionally, the television programs “60 Minutes” and “Survivor,” both boasting over 9 million viewers each from their respective six and five episodes, are joined by the debut of “NCIS: Origins” which garnered an impressive 8.9 million viewers.

The tracker is currently performing 18% above its seven-day, cross-platform average from last season, while Elsbeth has increased by 26%. However, it’s important to note that the sample size remains small. Across all primetime, CBS is leading the 2023-24 season by 2% in multi-platform viewing.
