Sadly, it’s been reported that the actor who portrayed Rafterman in Full Metal Jacket, has departed at the age of 69. This talented individual was born in Quebec, Canada in 1956, and made his mark in Hollywood after relocating to Los Angeles during the 1970s. Although his acting career didn’t span as long as some of his peers, he left an indelible impression in several significant films throughout the 80s and 90s.
On Friday, February 14, 2025, the actor sadly breathed his last in a Las Vegas hospital, with family members by his side. The exact reason for Howard’s passing remains undisclosed at this time. However, TMZ reported that Howard had been battling respiratory problems in the hospital for several weeks prior to his death. A close friend and co-star from their work on Full Metal Jacket, paid tribute to Kevyn Major Howard on X, recalling how his powerful performance in the film inspired countless young people to consider joining the US Marine Corps. In his emotional tribute, he said:
Kevyn Major Howard selflessly gave, giving tirelessly to the world and particularly to our military personnel. He gained renown for his portrayal of ‘Rafterman’ in Stanley Kubrick’s FULL METAL JACKET, which opened doors into the US Marine Corps community. For decades, he devoted himself to serving our nation’s bravest. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and love for others, America. May all divine beings shower their blessings upon you, Kevyn. Farewell. #SemperFidelis (Forever Faithful)
Matthew Modine, who portrayed Pvt. Joker in “Full Metal Jacket,” and Howard continued their friendship even after they collaborated on the war movie. As reported by TMZ, the two had a conversation before Howard passed away, explaining why Modine was able to write a tribute so promptly.
A Look Back at Kevyn Major Howard’s Achievements
As a cinephile reflecting on the illustrious career of Kevyn Major Howard, I must say that his last foray into acting was in the captivating science fiction series “Crusade” in 1999, where he gracefully portrayed a supporting role as an officer. However, it seems that photography is his true calling, as evident from his LinkedIn profile that boldly proclaims him to be a headshot photographer since 1977.
Regardless of the intermittent periods throughout his acting career, Howard has graced some of the most influential films and TV shows ever made. Following his breakout role in Serial with Martin Mull, he landed roles in movies like Death Wish II, Scared Straight Another Story, and Sudden Impact, cementing himself as a highly demanded actor during that era. The subsequent years were beneficial to Howard, who went on to play captivating roles in series such as Miami Vice and Superboy. However, his portrayal of Rafterman in Full Metal Jacket stands out as the most memorable achievement in his career. Nonetheless, Howard is also known as the “King of Hollywood headshots” according to BBC’s The Human Face.
