Transformer One Filmmakers Reveal Why Chris Hemsworth Had to Play Optimus Prime in Prequel

As a long-time Transformers fan who has seen the franchise evolve over the years, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about Chris Hemsworth taking on the role of Optimus Prime. However, after learning more about the reasoning behind this decision and hearing from both the producers and director, I’m now excited to see how Hemsworth brings his unique take on Orion Pax to life.

A groan of disappointment could be heard emanating from every Transformers fan when it was announced that Marvel star Chris Hemsworth would take over the role of Optimus Prime from franchise icon Peter Cullen. But, while many have had doubts about the Thor actor’s ability to bring the same gravitas to the Autobots leader, Transformers One producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has now explained to GamesRadar+ why the change was necessary for the prequel.

“Although Peter Cullen is aging, he will continue to be a fixture in the live-action franchise. However, it initially seemed unlikely due to his age.”

In our search, we aimed to discover an actor who could convincingly portray a youthful enthusiasm and innocence, characteristic of the younger generation. Yet, we also desired someone whose voice could mature into the deep tones reminiscent of Peter Cullen as they aged. Fortunately, we found Chris, as he naturally possesses a deep voice to start with, which was our hope – to uncover an actor who would embody both these qualities. And we consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have secured Chris for the role.

In the first “Transformers” movie, Orion Pax, not Optimus Prime, is the character’s initial identity. It might be surprising to know that a different voice actor was needed for this younger version since the original voice actor, Peter Cullen, was too old for the youthful tone required. This sentiment was shared by director Josh Cooley, who appreciated Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of the cherished character.

“The character should be more relaxed and playful. Not overly polished or refined, but rather someone who embodies Chris’s unique charm. Discussing Orion Pax with Chris, it was evident that many aspects of the character are reminiscent of him. When reading lines, he would often suggest his own interpretations, making it seem as if Orion Pax were a reflection of Chris himself.”

Chris Hemsworth Took ‘Motivation & Inspiration’ From Peter Cullen

Additional scenes from “Transformers One” suggest that Hemsworth is drawing inspiration from Cullen’s character. Phrases like “more than meets the eye,” reminiscent of the renowned voice actor, are expected to be part of his portrayal. In an interview with Comicbook.com at SDCC, Hemsworth shared some insights about playing the role, explaining…

“Creating a pile of humor and playful banter in the style of Peter Cullen can be quite challenging. Although at the end of the movie, when he transforms into Optimus Prime, we move closer to achieving it, I never intended to imitate that. Instead, I use it as inspiration and motivation. The work that Peter Cullen has done is so iconic, brilliant, and deserving of respect that I prefer to admire it from afar and pay tribute to it.”

Under the guidance of director Josh Cooley, Transformers One features Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Hamm, and Steve Buscemi in its cast. This film delves into the lesser-known backstory of Optimus Prime and Megatron.

The first Transformers movie, set to hit cinemas on September 20, 2024, is garnering positive early feedback, being hailed as one of the finest films in the series.
