Transformers One Is Upset at Box Office by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say this weekend’s box office results have left me more bewildered than a Decepticon lost in Autobot City. The ghost with the most, Beetlejuice, has managed to outshine the mighty Transformers in their own origin story! This is not just a shocker for the moviegoers but also for the industry analysts who predicted a different outcome.

Remarkably, even the powerful Autobots and Decepticons were outmaneuvered by an unassuming ghost, a surprising twist that took everyone by surprise. It was widely expected that Chris Hemsworth’s latest film, “Transformers One,” would claim the top spot at this weekend’s box office. However, in a shocking turn of events reminiscent of September surprises, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” edged out director Josh Cooley’s animated adventure by a narrow margin of just one million dollars. As per The Numbers, the “Beetlejuice” sequel is projected to secure the No. 1 position in the domestic box office with an estimated $26 million.

Initially, Transformers One took the lead at the box office during its previews on Thursday and again on Friday, earning $3.4 million and $9.6 million respectively. However, by Saturday, audience interest shifted dramatically towards Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, causing Transformers One to finish in second place with a weekend earnings of approximately $25 million.

On Saturday, September 21st, Michael Keaton’s chilling sequel clearly triumphed over Transformers One, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice moving up to the top spot by earning $11.8 million. The following day, the victory trend persisted as the movie featuring the most ghostly character outperformed the story of Orion Pax (Optimus Prime) and D-16 (Megatron), raking in $7.5 million compared to $6.3 million for the Transformers origin tale.

Newcomers Don’t Have Enough Juice to Challenge for No. 1

In a surprising turn of events, projections for Chris Hemsworth’s latest film suggested it would earn between $40 million and $50 million domestically (as reported by Boxoffice Pro). However, the animated origin story disappointingly fell short of these expectations. Meanwhile, Speak No Evil managed to secure the third position with earnings of $5.9 million. Unfortunately, none of the other new releases were able to offer a significant challenge to No. 1 film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Over the weekend, Halle Berry’s chilling survival thriller, “Never Let Go,” performed exceptionally well among other new releases, coming second only to “Transformers One.” It earned a spot at No. 4 with a box office take of $4.5 million. Demi Moore’s movie, “The Substance,” also had decent earnings, but it missed the Top 5 by a narrow margin, landing at No. 6 with a total of $3.1 million. The fifth spot went to “Deadpool & Wolverine” with an additional $3.9 million. Lastly, rounding out the Top 10 was “Jung Kook: I Am Still,” the latest entry among the new releases, which earned $1.4 million.

In a soft launch at only four cinemas, Sebastian Stan’s latest movie titled “A Different Man” from A24 has made an impressive debut. Despite not leading the overall box office, it managed to earn the highest per-theater average of $14,032 over the weekend, showcasing the success of Stan and director Aaron Schimberg’s collaboration. Meanwhile, another film, “Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field“, a documentary focusing on the renowned Emmy award-winning costume designer known for her work in the Sex and the City HBO series, also flourished in limited release at just one venue, bringing in $10,254.

To conclude, Sashe Calle’s highly praised film titled “In the Summers” has been released, though it is available in just two cinemas at present. Notably, Calle, who gained fame for her portrayal of Supergirl (Kara) in The Flash (2023), has earned critical acclaim. As I write this, “In the Summers” holds a remarkable 90% Tomatometer rating from 40 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Coming Up Next: “The Wild Robot” releases on September 27, however, Chris Sanders’ animated film needs to make use of its IMAX screens promptly, as the following week, starting October 4, will kick off the much-anticipated theatrical release of “Joker: Duet of Madness”. The highly expected sequel to “Joker” (2019) is aiming for a big box office debut in its opening weekend.
