In the year 2022, Netflix debuted a science fiction film named “Troll”, featuring a colossal troll causing chaos in Norway. This movie became a massive success on the streaming platform, setting the stage for its upcoming sequel titled “Troll 2“. However, I, along with some others, find naming the second installment as “Troll 2” a slight conundrum.
To set the record straight, I’m not dismissing the upcoming Netflix movie outright just because it’s a sequel or a disaster flick. However, I do have some concerns, primarily about its title, which seems to lack originality in more than one aspect. Let me elaborate for those who might be unfamiliar with the issue…
Troll 2 Is The Name Of A Cult-Favorite Horror Movie
1990 marked the debut of a film titled “Troll 2,” not directly linked to the 1986 movie “Troll” (unrelated to the Netflix original). Contrary to expectations, it bears no resemblance to the initial campy creature feature. Instead, the film is filled with goblins masquerading as humans who use magic to transform people into plants for consumption, rather than trolls. It can be streamed on Tubi.
Despite its poor quality special effects, illogical script penned by directors Claudio Fragasso and Rosella Drudi, and some delightfully over-the-top performances from a largely inexperienced cast, it is not often praised as one of the best horror films, but it has earned a special place among the most cherished “so bad, it’s good” movies ever made.
One of the most renowned horror movie documentaries, released in 2009 as Best Worst Movie, highlights and honors its unique status as a cult classic. In my opinion, the legacy of Troll 2 is just as distinctive as that of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room. I feel it shouldn’t be associated with another film of the same name, which might overshadow its special status and potentially lead it back into obscurity.

Numbered Sequels Are Uncreative Anyway
Once more, I find myself being candid – even without the reference to “Troll 2” from the ’90s, I would still express my displeasure towards this movie’s title. It seems that I am not alone in my frustration regarding sequels differentiating themselves from their predecessors by simply adding numbers (except when they get inventive with it, like “22 Jump Street” following “21 Jump Street”). Instead, I would rather see titles that are more creative, such as those used in the MCU’s subtitled sequels (“Avengers: Endgame” or “Spider-Man: Homecoming”), rather than falling back on legacy horror sequels with the same title as the original classics (e.g., 2018’s “Halloween” and 2022’s “Scream”). With all the advancements made by the MCU in using subtitled sequels, I find it regrettable that we appear to be taking steps backward in this regard.
Instead of calling the upcoming movie “Troll 2“, why not consider titles like “Another Troll“, “Troll: The Second Coming“, or even “Troll: Chapter Two“? Given that this film series revolves around a fantasy world, these options sound more fitting and engaging. Using a simple numeral might seem uninspired, especially considering that a “Troll 2” already exists in the franchise.

Still, I Am Excited For Netflix’s Troll 2
Although I strongly dislike the film’s title due to the reasons mentioned earlier, I want to clarify that I’m not opposing Troll 2. On the contrary, it is one of the streaming-exclusive upcoming movies in 2025 that I am particularly excited about.
As a movie critic, let me tell you, Roar Uthaug’s Norwegian monster flick on Netflix took me by surprise – in a good way! The director, whose name seems destined for the job, had me hooked from start to finish. So much so, that when Troll hinted at a potential sequel towards the end, I found myself genuinely eager for more. It’s not every day you find a film that leaves you wanting more!
It seems like the movie “Troll 2” might be another example that some dreams actually become reality. However, even though it doesn’t have a confirmed release date just yet, my hope for an extra wish is that they modify its title.
