The Trump administration’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, is said to have reinforced this request during a meeting last week with Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu at a conference in Munich. Hurezeanu has remained silent about the encounter, but his representative did comment on the independence of Romania’s judicial system. Grenell, who publicly supports the Tates and has criticized USAID as being manipulated against non-progressive individuals in Romania, has previously been critical of this U.S. government program.
