Tubi, the ad-supported streaming service owned by Fox, has now exceeded 97 million monthly active viewers.
In simple terms, the streaming platform, initially established in 2014, announced this week that it surpassed 10 billion total viewing hours throughout the entire year of 2024. This figure is a significant increase compared to the approximately 78 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs) they reported midway through that same year.
The recent surge in growth for Tubi is occurring as it battles competition within the FAST sector from prominent contenders like Pluto TV and Roku Channel. To defend its position, Tubi has increased its content library significantly, now boasting over 275,000 movies and TV episodes along with more than 300 original productions.
Tubi is growing fast because it’s competing against big players like Pluto TV and Roku Channel in the FAST market. To keep up, Tubi has added a lot of new shows and movies (over 275,000) to its library and created over 300 original programs.
To provide some context, Samsung TV Plus announced in October that their FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) service now boasts 88 million monthly active users. In the same month, Roku disclosed that the number of households streaming with their service had grown to 85.5 million, marking a rise of 2 million compared to the previous quarter.
Among the original series on Tubi that I’m excited about are “The Thicket,” a gripping western thriller starring Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis, the office-based comedy “The Z-Suite” with Lauren Graham, the comedy-drama “Boarders,” and episodes of “We Got Time Today,” hosted by sports icon Deion Sanders and media personality Rocsi Diaz.
Anjali Sud, CEO of Tubi, stated that the company’s popularity is surging because more people are appreciating a high-quality entertainment option that is simultaneously enjoyable, culturally relevant, and completely free.
Sud explained that our approach is straightforward yet impactful: prioritize the audience by providing distinctive narratives from diverse creators, an extensive library of content, and a pleasing user experience across various devices. We value feedback from our viewers and strive to maximize their engagement, and it’s working as planned.
Free, ad-supported streaming services like Tubi provide linear TV content, while FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels are growing in popularity as leading paid streaming providers combine their offerings to minimize expenses and maintain affordable pricing for budget-minded viewers.
In the broader context, traditional television broadcasters are experiencing a decrease in viewership due to the rise of cord-cutting and people who have never subscribed to cable or satellite services (cord nevers).
