Lovers of quirky horror-comedy films such as “Shaun of the Dead” are undoubtedly familiar with Eli Craig‘s 2010 hit, “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil“. This movie, which can be seen as somewhat self-referential, is a slasher comedy about the misadventures of two down-to-earth country buddies (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine). During a vacation in the woods, they’re mistaken for hillbilly killers by a group of clueless college kids. The film humorously skewers tropes common in the redneck slasher subgenre. Craig’s upcoming horror comedy, set to release in 2025, is titled “Clown in a Cornfield“. Unlike its predecessor, this film integrates contemporary sociopolitical themes like generational and class conflicts into its more traditional masked murderer narrative.
According to Adam Cesare’s Bram Stoker Award-winning 2020 novel “Clown in a Cornfield”, the story follows the characters Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and her father Dr. Maybrook (Aaron Abrams). They move to a small Missouri town called Kettle Springs, which is heavily focused on traditional values, hoping for a fresh start. Unbeknownst to them, they are moving into a troubled community hiding a vengeful clown killer. The sinister jester known as Frendo, the mascot of the well-known Baypen Corn Syrup brand, has a grudge against the progressive youths who might be responsible for the devastating fire at the Baypen factory.
At the premiere of the movie “Clown in a Cornfield” in New York, Craig was straightforward with MovieWeb regarding the long-awaited sequel to “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil”. He shared, “To be honest, I’ve had my own personal horror experience with ‘Tucker & Dale’, both internally and externally,” he started. Unfortunately, it seems that the production of the “Tucker & Dale” sequel might not survive.
Eli Craig Compares the Fate of the ‘Tucker & Dale’ Sequel to College Kids in a Slasher Flick
On April 29, 2025, MovieWeb had an engaging discussion with actors Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Kevin Durand, and Carson MacCormac, who starred in the SXSW hit film “Clown in a Cornfield“. During this chat, Craig expressed disappointment regarding the sequel to his directorial debut, “Tucker & Dale“, stating that it has been “crushed by a wood chipper multiple times more than college students in various scenarios”. This image certainly paints a vivid picture.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve often dreamt of crafting a sequel to the hilarious Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. There have been numerous attempts, yet the process of filmmaking can be as unpredictable as a lottery. Sometimes plans take unexpected turns. If we ever manage to make it happen, I’d be thrilled to share this tale with audiences once more. You know, sometimes the universe seems to guide us in certain directions, and it appears that the world wants this sequel. But maybe the desire for it is what should exist, rather than its actual realization. The universe often works in mysterious ways!
Despite Craig’s recent remarks not sounding overly optimistic, they leave room for possibilities. Stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine have voiced their wish for a follow-up, but only if it maintains an authentic feel. As Tudyk mentioned at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, “We don’t want to tarnish the original with a subpar sequel. That isn’t common practice in Hollywood, but I’m glad we’re taking that approach.” Labine further emphasized, “It’s gradually gaining popularity as a cult classic — who knows. Therefore, producing a quick-profit sequel just seems like a poor decision.
You can catch Clown in a Cornfield in U.S. theaters on May 9, 2025.
