As a die-hard fan of Saoirse Ronan‘s mesmerizing performances, I can’t help but feel a pang of regret that she missed out on embodying Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series. Her portrayal of unconventional characters like Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson and Jo March in Little Women showcases her ability to bring eccentricities to life while making them heartwarmingly relatable.
Saoirse Ronan made a name for herself in Hollywood at a remarkably young age by starring alongside top-tier actors in major films. Her impressive filmography includes notable performances in “Atonement,” “Little Women,” “Brooklyn,” and “Lady Bird,” all of which earned her Oscar nominations. Yet, every actor has roles that they missed out on, and Ronan confessed which iconic part she regrettably didn’t get to play. A clue: it comes from the world of Harry Potter.
Skilled actors and actresses who’ve accumulated numerous roles may not win every audition they attend. For instance, Britney Spears almost secured a part in “The Notebook,” Paul Walker came close to starring in “A Knight’s Tale,” and Saoirse Ronan, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, shared that she missed an opportunity to play an iconic Harry Potter character that seemed tailored for her.
Years back, I tried my luck for Luna Lovegood’s role in Harry Potter, as she reminded me of an Irish character. They ended up inviting the whole of Ireland, or half of it at least, to audition. Though I knew I wasn’t old enough for the part, it was still a thrill to read a scene that would later be featured in Harry Potter books. It was simply awesome!
In the year 2007, the eccentric yet endearing character of Luna Lovegood was introduced in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” That same year, Saoirse Ronan starred in her first major film, “Atonement,” and she was just 12 years old while filming that. Since Luna was about 14 when she appeared in the Harry Potter series, it’s likely that Ronan was too young to portray a fourth-year Hogwarts student at the time.
Indeed, Saoirse Ronan might have been perfectly suited for the role of Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series. Her blonde hair and striking blue eyes could easily capture Luna’s appearance. Furthermore, I believe that she would have done an excellent job portraying Luna’s quirky personality while also making her character endearing and relatable. Additionally, it would have been fascinating to witness a scene where she shares with Harry about her late mother, much like the original portrayal.
In her acting career, the actress who starred in “The Lovely Bones” has previously taken on unusual roles as well. For instance, in Greta Gerwig’s notable films, such as “Lady Bird” and “Little Women”, these characters boldly march to the rhythm of their individual melodies.
As a die-hard fan, I was just as disappointed as Saoirse Ronan herself when she shared that she couldn’t embody the quirky Barbie character alongside Kate McKinnon in the movie “Barbie.” Instead, she chose to bring to life a woman who returns to her Scottish farm after rehab in the biopic “The Outrun.” It would have been an absolute joy to watch this brilliant actress inhabit the whimsical world of Barbieland, but given that she’s not only the star but also the producer of this smaller film, it becomes clear why she had to make this decision.

Despite not getting the part of Luna Lovegood, Saoirse Ronan’s career has been nothing less than astonishing. In fact, there are already whispers of Oscar recognition for her leading role in the 2024 movie, “The Outrun,” which is currently playing in cinemas.
