TV Fashion Docuseries in the Works from Hal Rubenstein, Magilla Entertainment (Exclusive)

As a lifelong gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the virtual worlds of fashion and television, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement about Hal Rubenstein’s upcoming docuseries. As a founding editor of InStyle magazine and an author with a best-selling book under his belt, Rubenstein is no stranger to the intersection of style and pop culture.

Hal Rubenstein, a designer, editor, and author, plans to adapt his popular book detailing TV’s impact on fashion into a television series.

Rubenstein, one of the original editors for InStyle magazine, is working on a documentary series inspired by his popular 2023 book “Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows.” This project is being collaborated with Magilla Entertainment, known for shows like Discovery’s “Moonshiners” and HGTV’s “Beachfront Bargain Hunt.” This week, they will be presenting the show to potential buyers.

In the proposed series, similar to a book, Rubenstein will engage in discussions with costume designers, producers, and actors about how television has shaped and been shaped by fashion trends. Notable shows discussed in the book include “Friends”, “Emily in Paris”, “Miami Vice”, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Empire”, “Gossip Girl”, “Dynasty” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, along with numerous others.

As a fashion enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of documenting style trends in magazines, at global fashion hubs, and on the red carpet. Yet, nothing has ever surpassed television’s growing impact in shaping our wardrobes for various occasions – from workdays to cozy nights at home, romantic dates, vacations, and big night-outs. Writing “Dressing the Part” was an exhilarating journey; I couldn’t fathom why no book had ever highlighted the influence of TV costume design, the genius artists behind it, and the timeless outfits they’ve crafted over the decades. Now, I’m thrilled to leverage television as a platform to exhibit its captivating, intelligent, sometimes quirky, but always stunning power on what we choose to wear. This is going to be an exciting and fulfilling adventure!

Laura Palumbo Johnson, co-founder of Magilla Entertainment, stated, “It’s high time for a docuseries focusing on this topic – 70 years of groundbreaking TV, viewed through the lens of fashion. The ideal host for such a series is Hal Rubenstein, given his unique access, knowledge, and credibility.” She expressed delight at joining forces with him to elaborate and deepen the themes presented in his book.

The project boasts the approval of costume designer Eric Daman (known for his work on ‘Billions’ and both versions of ‘Gossip Girl’), who is highlighted in the book. Given the widespread fascination with how fashion impacts television and vice versa, Hal’s enlightening book, ‘Dressing the Part‘, serves as a timeless pop culture treasure trove of unforgettable TV style. This extensive, engaging compilation of design and behind-the-scenes information is set to captivate audiences from all generations, particularly fashion enthusiasts everywhere.
