As a longtime fan of legal dramas and a connoisseur of CBS’ prime-time lineup, I must say the revival of Matlock has truly outdone itself! With a whopping 7.73 million viewers tuning in for its premiere, it’s clear that this new iteration has struck a chord with audiences. It’s been five years since we’ve seen such a strong turnout for a CBS series debut, and Kathy Bates is certainly living up to the hype!
CBS’ update on Matlock brought in a strong audience for its premiere Sunday night.
The new legal drama featuring Kathy Bates, titled similarly but with significant differences from the ’80s-’90s series starring Andy Griffith, attracted a record-breaking 7.73 million viewers during its premiere. Since the airing of shows following the Super Bowl, this is the biggest audience for a CBS show in over five years; the last time such high viewership was recorded was when “The Code” followed an episode of “NCIS” in April 2019.
7.73 million viewers would have placed within the top 5 of CBS’ daytime audiences for scripted shows during the previous season, excluding the premiere of Tracker following the Super Bowl.
In last week’s broadcast, Matlock attracted the largest audience of any show airing its season or series premiere (the 2024-25 season according to Nielsen officially starts on Monday), with a viewership of [approximately] 4.97 million viewers. Among other shows, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars claimed the highest total audience, followed closely by Survivor on CBS, which had around 4.72 million viewers. Both Dancing With the Stars and Survivor tied for the top rating among adults aged 18 to 49, each earning a rating of 0.73, which is equivalent to about 980,000 viewers in that age group.
On September 17, “High Potential” outperformed “The Good Doctor” on ABC during the same time slot, drawing in 3.59 million viewers compared to “The Good Doctor’s” average of 2.48 million viewers in the 10 p.m. Tuesday spot last spring.
The ratings for the debut of “Rescue: Hi-Surf” on Fox Sunday, airing after the network’s NFL doubleheader, weren’t yet released at the time this was published. Previously in the month, the animated series “Universal Basic Guys,” which initially aired with an NFL lead-in, garnered 4.03 million viewers, but dropped below 1 million for its subsequent episode.
