TV Ratings: Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Hits All-Time High for Second Straight Year

As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and tradition, I must say, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade feels like taking a step back into a world that cherishes joy, unity, and celebration. With over 31 million viewers tuning in this year, it’s clear that this event transcends generations, bringing families together to witness the spectacle unfold.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade drew its largest cross-platform audience on record Thursday.

According to initial estimates from Nielsen ratings and Adobe Analytics, approximately 31.3 million people tuned in to watch the parade on NBC and Peacock this year. This is a 10% increase compared to last year’s total viewership of 28.5 million, which was the previous record high. The viewership count takes into account both the live morning broadcast and a rebroadcast in the afternoon on the traditional network, as well as streaming on Peacock.

To start, the morning broadcast that was shown across all time zones from 8:30 a.m. until noon garnered an impressive viewership of 23.6 million people, making it the most-watched entertainment program (not including sports or news) this year and over the past four years. The last entertainment show to attract a larger audience was the 2024 Oscars. NBC also mentioned that Peacock streaming hours increased by 26% compared to the previous year, but they haven’t disclosed the exact number.

For individuals aged 18-49, the live broadcast of the parade achieved a rating of 5.4 (approximately representing 7.24 million viewers), marking the highest viewership for any entertainment show on both broadcast and cable networks since ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in 2021.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but swell with pride when talking about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s truly heartwarming to learn that more people than ever before tuned in to watch it on NBC and Peacock this year. This parade is unlike any other tradition, a unique spectacle that signals the start of the holiday season. Each year, I look forward to being a part of it alongside our valued partners at Macy’s.

Speaking about it, executive producer Will Cross stated, “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a cherished tradition that kicks off the holiday season every year. We are proud to bring this legendary event to life and spread moments of inspiration and happiness through top-notch entertainment that only we can provide for our customers and the country.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel like I missed out on some major TV events over Thanksgiving! Not only was it the biggest day for television viewing of the year, but there were other shows that pulled in massive crowds too. After the parade, NBC’s National Dog Show really stole the show, averaging an impressive 12.2 million viewers across platforms – a four-year high!

On Thanksgiving, a late afternoon NFL game featuring the Dallas Cowboys versus the New York Giants attracted approximately 38.5 million viewers across various channels, making it the fourth most-watched Thanksgiving game on any network if these numbers remain consistent. Meanwhile, NBC’s prime-time NFL matchup (Green Bay Packers vs. Miami Dolphins) garnered an average of 26.6 million viewers across platforms, marking the third consecutive year it surpassed 26 million viewers. Viewership data for CBS’ early afternoon NFL contest between the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears was not available at the time of publication.

After the NBC NFL game and local news, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (2.8 million viewers) and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” (1.5 million) saw their highest viewership numbers since last Thanksgiving’s episodes.
