TV Ratings: ‘SNL’ Hits Four-Year Premiere High With Season 50 Opener

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for comedy, I must say that the return of Saturday Night Live (SNL) to our screens is like hitting a level-up in my entertainment world! The 50th season premiere was nothing short of spectacular, and the impressive ratings prove it. With the stellar performances by Jean Smart, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Dana Carvey, and more, I felt like I was at a reunion of some sort, a comedy convention if you will!

Saturday Night Live began its milestone 50th season with a sizable ratings bump.

The debut episode of the new season, headed by Emmy winner Jean Smart from Hacks, attracted 5.3 million viewers as per initial ratings from Nielsen (excluding streaming figures). This is the strongest start for a Saturday Night Live season since 2020 and represents a 15% increase compared to the 4.6 million viewers who watched last year’s opener.

The opening event showcased numerous guest appearances, among them were three by previous castmembers: Maya Rudolph reprised her role as Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg took on the part of Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey stepped into the shoes of President Joe Biden. Additionally, comedian Jim Gaffigan made an appearance to portray Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ VP nominee, while regular cast members James Austin Johnson and Bowen Yang played the roles of the Republican presidential and vice-presidential nominees, Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance respectively.

With approximately 5.3 million viewers tuning in, Saturday Night Live has become one of the most-watched entertainment shows during the initial week of the 2024-25 season, according to same-day data. As for Sunday’s primetime ratings, it currently lags behind only three other shows on NBC: The Voice (5.96 million viewers), Chicago Fire (5.6 million), and Chicago Med (5.46 million).

In presidential election years, Saturday Night Live (SNL) usually sees an increase in viewership – for instance, the season 46 premiere in 2020 attracted over 8 million viewers, marking a four-year peak at that point.
