Twisters and Nope Actor Brandon Perea Compares His Summer Blockbuster Characters

As a huge fan of disaster films and storm chasing documentaries, I was beyond excited when I heard that Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” was coming out, serving as a spiritual sequel to the iconic 1996 film “Twister.” The prospect of seeing another group of enthusiastic storm chasers braving the Oklahoma plains for the next big tornado was an irresistible draw.

In the footsteps of “Twister” (1996), director Lee Isaac Chung’s film “Twisters” continues some of the major motifs and stock characters from the original story. These include the lovable yet eccentric storm chasers who are always on the lookout for the next massive tornado in Oklahoma.

In the movie “Twister,” Philip Seymour Hoffman portrayed the passionate and dedicated scientist Dusty Davies, who was part of Jo Harding’s (Helen Hunt) team responsible for deploying Dorothy, a weather sensor, three decades ago. Now, Brandon Perea takes on that role as Boone, the unconventional videographer in Tyler Owens’ (Glen Powell) group of storm chasers who have gained popularity through social media.

NBC’s insider had an engaging conversation with Perea not too long ago. They talked about his exciting collaborations with Jordan Peele on the movie “Nope,” and presently with Chung on the upcoming project “Twisters.” Additionally, they explored the similarities and differences between Perea’s humorous characters Angel and Boone.

Instead of “Whether Boone’s yeehawing from behind his mobile camera rig or helping Tyler prepare for their amplified viral truck stunts, Perea serves as the hilarious one-man hype team for Tyler and the tornadoes,” you could also say:

“I couldn’t help but laugh as Perea described her experience playing the enthusiastic Boone, ‘I was really letting out a loud cheering every step of the way.’ She added, ‘Despite the extensive preparation required to embody Boone’s unique demeanor, once I got it right, the role became effortless. All I had to do was run around and joyfully scream along with this fantastic team.'”

As a gamer, I was thrilled when Perea commended Chung for granting us all the freedom to create our unique characters from the ground up. Instead of dictating rigid roles, he encouraged us to ponder thought-provoking questions like, “What does your character do when they’re not on their quest?” These queries compelled us to delve deeper into our characters’ backstories and personalities. Moreover, Chung was an exceptional director who made us feel valued and at ease amidst the chaos of production.

Perea’s Guide to Effective Comic Relief

Perea described the atmosphere on the Twisters set as being similar to that of Jordan Peele’s Nope, which made him feel at ease and receptive to discovering funny moments during filming.

The actor shared that Peele and Chung offered him a great deal of creative autonomy during filming. They gave him the flexibility to experiment with new ideas in each take, which he deeply appreciates.

In “Nope,” Perea received significant acclaim for portraying IT tech Angel Torres, a humorous character who contributes uniquely to the movie by helping the Haywood siblings, acted by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, set up their video cameras.

“Playing Angel and Boone, two distinctly different comic relief characters, is an exciting experience for me,” Perea explained. “Angel brings a darker, more subtle form of humor to the table, while Boone represents pure fun and freedom. I enjoy bringing these unique character dynamics to life, staying true to the story without trying to outshine anyone with my comedic skills.”

The actor expressed his joy that despite playing renowned characters in big-budget movies, he has managed to immerse himself fully into the parts and avoid being typecast, remaining inconspicuous to the general public.

I’ve had quite an interesting journey in my acting career so far. When I’m out and about, people often ask me what I do for a living and where they might have seen me before. Recently, I starred in a movie called “Nope.” Now, when someone asks me about it, I love to see the surprised look on their face when I tell them that’s the film I was in.
