‘Twisters’ Breaks the Streaming Record Held by ‘Oppenheimer’

As a film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from black-and-white classics to 3D blockbusters, and everything in between. And let me tell you, Glen Powell’s Twisters has left quite an impression on me!

As a passionate movie aficionado, I’ve got to say that Twisters, Glen Powell’s follow-up to the iconic Twister, has truly made waves in the streaming world! Just 14 days after its premiere on Peacock, this thrilling tornado sequel has claimed the title as the streamer’s most-watched film, dethroning Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning biographical drama Oppenheimer. That’s right, folks, in a stunning turn of events, Powell’s blockbuster has outperformed Nolan’s historical masterpiece across the streaming universe. Debuting in July of this year, the summer smash raked in an impressive $371 million at the box office from a production budget of $155 million. The critical response has been overwhelmingly positive as well, with critics awarding it a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s safe to say that Twisters is one of the biggest films of the year!

By the deadline, the movie “Twisters” has been added to Peacock’s catalog of successful Pay 1 films, such as “Despicable Me 4” and “The Fall Guy: The Extended Cut.” According to a report from Deadline, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” currently holds the record for a Peacock premiere. However, since the film was a simultaneous release (available in theaters and on the streaming platform), it doesn’t compete with “Twisters” in the same category. Pay 1 refers to the period when a theatrical release is exclusively available on a streaming service. Initially, “Twisters” will spend four months on Peacock, followed by ten months on Prime Video, and then another four months on Peacock again.

The movie titled “Twisters” focuses on Tyler Owens, a storm expert who is popularly known as an influencer, played by actor Tye Sheridan (Powell). During the tornado season in Oklahoma, he collaborates with Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) to delve deeper into the mysterious occurrence of these natural disasters. They might even conduct their own analysis. This film was helmed by director Lee Isaac Chung from a script penned by Mark L. Smith, and it also features Brandon Perea, Anthony Ramos, and Maura Tierney in key roles.

Although both movies have a comparable font and title, and were marketed as a sequel, it’s worth noting that the second film doesn’t seamlessly tie into Jan de Bont’s 1996 disaster flick “Twister.” The only connection is the brief appearance of a Dorothy device, which was a container filled with hundreds of flying sensors in the original movie. Beyond this minor detail, there isn’t much to link the two films together.

‘Twisters’ Is Another Winner for Universal Pictures

In the North American region, it was Universal Pictures who distributed the film, and this territory accounted for a massive $267.8 million earnings of Twisters. Since Oppenheimer was also a Universal Pictures release, it indicates that they are once again raking in profits from another successful movie.

In the cinematic landscape this year, Universal saw significant success alongside others with Despicable Me 4 and Kung Fu Panda 4, both animated sequels that held their ground against heavy-hitters like Disney and Warner Bros., who raked in substantial profits from their own franchise releases. This indicates a challenging environment for filmmakers aiming to bring unique stories to the screen, as they must find innovative ways to imprint their distinctive styles upon what are essentially predefined franchise molds.

2025 seems unlikely to bring about a shift, as blockbusters like “Superman,” “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Captain America: Brave New World” are all sequels or adaptations of popular IPs. These movies are expected to rake in millions and rank among the top films of the year, suggesting that original productions may not be making significant waves at the box office this year.
