Twisters Star Brandon Perea Is Hopeful That The OA Will Return

As a dedicated fan and avid gamer of television series, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to “The OA.” Five long years have passed since we were left reeling after Netflix abruptly canceled this groundbreaking and thought-provoking show following its second season. For me, and for countless others, the ending was a bitter pill to swallow, as it left us with more questions than answers and an unquenchable thirst for resolution.

Five years have passed since fans bid farewell to the cherished Netflix show “The OA,” which was unexpectedly terminated after two seasons in August 2019. The series left off with a mind-blowing cliffhanger, and its devoted fanbase continues to long for resolution. Among them is star Brandon Perea, who portrayed Alfonso “French” Sosa on the show. This weekend, Perea will face off against nature in the new film “Twisters,” co-starring Glen Powell.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter before the release of his new movie, Perea expressed his optimism about “The OA” not being permanently canceled. He shared that he’s among those who hold onto the hope that the series may come back to life and complete the captivating story initiated by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij in 2016. If such an opportunity arises, Perea assured that he would gladly rejoin the cast to carry on from where the plot had previously ended.

I’m among those with a strong belief that the story of “The OA” isn’t finished. I’m open to rejoining the series whenever it resumes, even if I’m unsure how it will unfold. There seem to be unresolved chapters, and Zal is optimistic about continuing the tale. It’s an enigmatic sensation we have.

Zal Batmanglij, who previously teamed up with star and co-creator Brit Marling on the short film “The Recordist,” has given Perea optimism for the future of “The OA.” The duo went on to produce the films “Sound of My Voice” and “The East” together. For Perea, it’s Batmanglij’s confidence that the series will resume that fuels his anticipation.

I can relate to his unwavering confidence. It instills in me a sense of assurance, making me believe that we’ll indeed finish strong. Their steadfastness doesn’t surprise me in the least; Batmanglij and Marling are true warriors.

The OA Was Unfortunately Ahead of Its Time

The thought-provoking television show “The OA” explored intricacies of time travel, loss, renewal, personal power, and camaraderie among its many themes. Featuring performances by Perea, Marling, Emory Cohen, Patrick Gibson, Jason Isaacs, Ian Alexander, Brendan Meyer, and Phyllis Smith, this intriguing cast came together around the enigmatic figure of Prairie (Marling). As they embarked on a mission guided by Prairie, they also grappled with their individual beliefs.

As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of The OA, I can’t help but be left in shock after the mind-bending season finale. Homer, played by Emory Cohen, was unexpectedly gunned down by Hap, portrayed by Jason Isaacs. The series then took an unconventional turn, going meta and shattering the fourth wall to invade our dimension. This bizarre twist left Homer’s consciousness trapped inside Steve’s body (Patrick Gibson). I know it sounds surreal, but that was just one of the many reasons why The OA stood out from the crowd. With a complex plotline intended for a five-season run, some viewers might have been puzzled, and unfortunately, the series was canceled prematurely. As committed followers who had grown attached to something innovative, we were left dangling, feeling let down by those in charge who took away our cherished show.

Perea isn’t convinced that “The OA” has actually ended, a view shared by Batmanglij and Marling. In a conversation with Salon towards the end of 2023, they mentioned shows like “Twin Peaks” as examples of canceled productions that eventually resurfaced.

As an avid fan, I’ve noticed that some shows do make a comeback. For instance, Twin Peaks returned to our screens after a long hiatus. So, who knows? With the ever-changing climate of the entertainment industry, there might just be a time when that beloved show can bloom once more in our garden of television.

We can only cross our fingers and hope that “The OA” will experience a comeback as successful as “Twin Peaks,” although until an announcement is made confirming the show’s renewal, we’ll continue to express our strong desire for its continuation through passionate hand gestures.
