A little-remembered yet underappreciated action film starring Blade‘s [actor’s name] and the well-known Hollywood figure [actor’s name] is about to become available for free streaming. Originally released in 1998, the action-packed adventure titled was actually a sequel to the iconic 90s Harrison Ford film The Fugitive. In this continuation, a man unjustly accused once again finds himself on the run, this time from Jones’ tenacious character, U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard. Instead of pursuing Indiana Jones, Gerard now confronts The Daywalker in this thrilling tale.
Under the direction of Stuart Baird and scripted by John Pogue, the movie titled U.S. Marshals presents Snipes’ character Mark Roberts, a federal fugitive on the run, showcasing his unique abilities. Joining Jones in this cast are several actors from the original series The Fugitive, including Joe Pantoliano, Daniel Roebuck, and Tom Wood, along with Kate Nelligan, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and others. Beginning its journey to a free streaming platform on April 1, you can learn more about this action-packed movie by reading the official synopsis below.
A US Marshal named Sam Gerard, portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, flies on a plane that crashes in a remote location. On this same flight is Mark Sheridan, a federal prisoner charged with double murder, who manages to escape during the crash confusion, yet saves some passengers from the wreckage first. Gerard is tasked with capturing the fugitive, teaming up with John Royce, an agent from the State Department (played by Robert Downey Jr.). They persistently chase after Sheridan, even as they start to question his innocence.
Forget the Critics, ‘U.S. Marshals’ Has a Lot To Offer Action Fans
Contrary to The Fugitive, a remake of a 1960s TV show, U.S. Marshals did not attain the same level of acclaimed cinematic action status. While The Fugitive boasted an impressive 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, U.S. Marshals was criticized with a “rotten” rating of only 30%, and a lower 53% from audiences on the Popcornmeter at release. Critics generally agreed that U.S. Marshals was a mediocre action thriller, paling in comparison to the cherished blockbuster it followed, according to the critical consensus.
The esteemed movie critic Roger Ebert regrettably felt that the movie “U.S. Marshals” didn’t measure up to its predecessor in his opinion. However, he did commend the impressive stunts and action scenes in the film.
The outcome lacks coherence and conviction. Despite some jaw-dropping stunts and visually impressive special effects scenes, and Jones’ accurate portrayal alongside Snipes’ empathetic fugitive character, the story fails to drive the narrative forward. In other words, the storyline is as derailed as the train wreck depicted in the initial movie.
Regardless, “U.S. Marshals” provides ample entertainment for action movie enthusiasts seeking a thrilling Friday night at home. With another gripping yet humorously delivered performance from Tommy Lee Jones as the tenacious U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard and an engaging portrayal from Wesley Snipes, “U.S. Marshals” may not have scaled the heights of its predecessor, “The Fugitive,” but it remains a worthy addition to your watchlist when it becomes available for free streaming next month.
