Ubisoft Says Star Wars Outlaws Underperformed, But It Still Turns Up A Top-Seller In The US

Ubisoft Says Star Wars Outlaws Underperformed, But It Still Turns Up A Top-Seller In The US

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of Ubisoft’s releases, I find myself both intrigued and slightly disheartened by the performance of Star Wars Outlaws. On one hand, it’s heartening to see a Star Wars game do well in the market, even if it didn’t quite meet expectations. On the other hand, as a follower of Ubisoft’s journey, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that their ambition for Outlaws wasn’t fully realized.

Story Highlights

  • Star Wars Outlaws is Ubisoft’s latest release, launching to a lukewarm reception in August 2024.
  • The game has turned out to be a best-seller in the United States, trailing behind two EA titles.
  • Ubisoft said earlier in an investor report that Star Wars Outlaws’ sales failed to meet expectations.

As a passionate Star Wars fan, I must admit that my initial excitement for Ubisoft’s latest open-world RPG, Star Wars Outlaws, was somewhat dampened after its release in late August this year. Despite the fact that Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, declared it as their “biggest marketing effort ever” for a Ubisoft release, the game’s sales didn’t quite live up to expectations, being labeled as “softer than expected.” It’s a bit disappointing, given the anticipation and hype surrounding this title.

According to Ubisoft investors, although [Assassin’s Creed Shadows] has all its intended features, we’ve decided to give it extra time for fine-tuning based on what we learned from the release of Star Wars Outlaws.

Despite being an older title, Star Wars Outlaws remains a top-selling game in the US. According to Matt Piscatella, an analyst from NPD Group, Star Wars Outlaws was second only to two other games in August’s market analysis. Interestingly, these two leading titles are both sports-focused releases by Electronic Arts.

In simpler terms, even though Star Wars Outlaws managed to sell fairly well, it didn’t reach Ubisoft’s desired level of success. For comparison, Assassin’s Creed Mirage exceeded 5 million sales in a short time frame, making it Ubisoft’s most successful next-gen launch so far. Given the costs associated with Star Wars Outlaws’ production and marketing, it was reasonable for Ubisoft to have high expectations from the start.

Ubisoft Is Gearing Up To Release Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Currently, Ubisoft’s stocks are at their lowest point in a decade following an announcement, and shortly after that, they decided to postpone the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Earlier reports suggested that Ubisoft invested approximately $800 million into Skull and Bones, a project which has been struggling and may be the cause for their recent financial difficulties.

In a change from the original plan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will now be slated for release on Valentine’s Day next year instead of its previously scheduled launch on November 15. Feel free to share your excitement about the game in the comments below!
