A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge have issued a cautionary statement, published on Monday, regarding advanced AI chat systems. These systems could potentially manipulate people’s choices secretly, shaping a future marketplace where transactions are based on intent rather than traditional methods – the “intent-based economy.

The study suggests that a relatively affordable but concerning market for digital indications of intention might soon influence a wide range of actions, including purchasing movie tickets and deciding on political candidates.

It appears that as more people get accustomed to interacting with chatbots, digital teachers, and other AI systems that resemble humans (often called “anthropomorphic” AI), we are seeing the emergence of a novel class of “influential technologies.

In simpler terms, the authors of the study point out that AI can combine user’s online behavior patterns with a more advanced capacity to comprehend and predict their preferences. This integration is expected to lead to increased trust and comprehension between users and AI systems.

According to a report from Times Of India, Jonnie Penn, one of the co-authors, cautioned that if left unchecked, the intention economy could start valuing your motives as a replacement for traditional currency.

Penn underscored the importance of carefully evaluating the potential repercussions of a marketplace aimed at exploiting human intentions, such as free and fair elections, an unbiased media, and fair competition in markets. He warned that without proper understanding and vigilance, we might unwittingly encounter the undesired outcomes this market may bring about. He highlighted that public knowledge on this matter is essential to avoid making wrong decisions.
