Unbelievable A-List Lineup for SNL’s 50th Anniversary Special Revealed!

It’s surprising, but this year marks half a century since the debut of Saturday Night Live, a show created by Lorne Michaels. Launched on October 11, 1975, the early days weren’t always smooth sailing, but it certainly made a significant impact on popular culture. The original cast included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O’Donoghue, Gilda Radner, and host George Carlin. As its 50th anniversary special nears, NBC has revealed a partial lineup of big-name actors, musicians, and celebrities set to appear.

The upcoming special event, titled “SNL50: The Anniversary Special“, is expected to showcase an impressive lineup of renowned celebrities, as reported by Variety. This star-studded gathering includes the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks, Kim Kardashian, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Scarlett Johansson, Dave Chappelle, Miley Cyrus, Paul Simon, Robert De Niro, Sabrina Carpenter, Pedro Pascal, Bad Bunny, Quinta Brunson, Peyton Manning, Woody Harrelson, Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, and John Mulaney. Further announcements regarding additional stars are imminent.

NBC is Celebrating 50 Years of SNL with Multiple Specials and Documentaries

As a movie critic reflecting on the build-up to SNL’s 50th Anniversary show, I must express my admiration for NBC’s thoughtful celebration of this iconic program. The captivating four-part documentary, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, delved deep into the rich history of SNL, offering a fascinating glimpse into the audition process, unforgettable sketches that left us in stitches, the somewhat peculiar 11th season following a significant cast overhaul, and infamous sketches that remain etched in our memories.

Musicians significantly enriched the program, and a fresh documentary titled “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (drummer of The Roots), premiered in January’s end. It delved into the lasting impact of these musical acts, featuring some iconic performances – like Sinead O’Connor ripping a Pope photo or Ashlee Simpson’s live lip-sync exposure – as well as memorable ones from groups such as the Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, The Strokes, and others. Occasionally, this writer would tune in solely to catch their favorite bands performing.

On February 14, there’s a unique event called “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” taking place at Radio City Music Hall. The show will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon. If you can’t make it in person, don’t worry, as you can catch the livestream on Peacock. This special concert features an array of music genres, with performers like The B-52s, The Roots, David Byrne, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Eddie Vedder, Jack White, Backstreet Boys, Chris Martin, DEVO, Jelly Roll, Mumford & Sons, Post Malone, Robyn, Brittany Howard, Bad Bunny, Arcade Fire, Bonnie Raitt, and many more.

Not only has it been instrumental for several decades in catapulting its comedic actors to stardom, such as Dan Aykroyd, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, and many others, but it also birthed the successful film adaptation of the popular sketch show, “Wayne’s World.” This movie, which gained massive popularity in early 1992, even resurrected the fame of Queen after the tragic demise of Freddie Mercury.

SNL50: The Anniversary Special will be a three-hour live show and will air on Feb. 16 on NBC.
