As a design enthusiast with a penchant for all things innovative and luxurious, I was absolutely captivated by Lexus’ latest collaboration with Crafting Plastics, titled “Liminal Cycles.” Having attended numerous Art & Design Weeks in Miami, I can confidently say that this installation stands out as one of the most immersive and thought-provoking experiences yet.
In the area where creativity meets high-end aesthetics, Lexus has collaborated with Crafting Plastics research and design studio based in Bratislava. Together they have introduced ‘Liminal Cycles’, an interactive exhibition focusing on items made from materials influenced by the Lexus LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero Catalyst) Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) concept car. This exhibition is available at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, until December 15th. The immersive display emphasizes the harmonious relationship between organic materials and design driven by software reactivity.
Liminal Cycles represents Lexus’ third collaboration with ICA Miami, and its ninth consecutive year participating in Miami Art & Design Week. This demonstrates a strong dedication to providing captivating experiences for a young audience interested in international art, design, and high-end luxury goods. The exhibit emphasizes the innovative aspect of SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles), focusing on adaptability and advanced technology as the key areas driving future software customization and personalized design in luxury vehicles.
Works by Germane Barnes, Michael Bennett (Studio Kër), Suchi Reddy, Tara Sakhi (T SAKHI) and Crafting Plastics collaborate to embody reflections in a compact series of 26 designs, upholding Lexus’ fundamental principles of materiality, sustainability, functionality, technology, and innovation. The exhibit showcases unique pieces, including the exclusive Lexus x dilo candle, which exudes an earthy aroma from moss and cedar essential oils, derived entirely from soy wax grown in the United States and equipped with clean-burning cotton wicks. As the scent permeates, it unveils middle notes of blood orange and bergamot, while base notes of amber create a warm ambiance for the senses.
A set of miniature collectible coasters for your candle, crafted with particles of amber glass, gold leaves, and aluminum, enhances the scent experience by serving as sensory vessels. These items are housed within a reactive box designed by Crafting Plastics (headed by Vlasta Kubušová and Miroslav Král), with the intention of providing an immersive exploration through Lexus’ design history. This collection is inspired by a key piece from Liminal Cycles, and a UV flashlight provided by Lexus brings the accompanying box to life. The sculptural object exhibits a delicate, breath-like quality, contracting slightly in shape and leaving traces of light drawn by UV rays.
At the heart of the “Liminal Cycles” display, located within the museum’s sculpture garden, stands a car sculpture reminiscent of a real-life Lexus LF-ZC, fashioned from biodegradable 3D-printed Nuatan®, a material derived entirely from renewable resources. This sculpture interacts with its surroundings in real-time, thanks to a UV-responsive skin that adjusts color and form based on the viewer’s proximity and exposure to UV radiation. Three additional installations surround this central piece, each providing sensory responses – audio, visual, and olfactory – triggered by specific design elements linked to the LF-ZC. The installation celebrates the potential of reactive design and its real-world applications in luxury products, with a particular focus on the Lexus LF-ZC.
In the video provided, observe the traces of the installation. For residents in Miami, the exhibit titled “Liminal Cycles” is currently on display at ICA Miami, running until December 15th. To discover more about Lexus’ LF-ZC, check out their website.
