‘Uncharted’ Sequel Dependent on Tom Holland’s Busy Schedule

As a longtime fan of the Uncharted franchise, I find myself both eager and patient for the sequel to hit the big screen. Having grown up playing the games, I was initially disappointed with the first adaptation, but I’ve come to appreciate it for what it was – a promising foundation for further adventures.

The Sony-produced adaptation of the “Uncharted” video game series didn’t meet all the high hopes surrounding such a legendary franchise, but still generated enough buzz for a follow-up. Since the initial movie was launched in 2022, news about “Uncharted 2” has been sparse at best. With Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as main actors, “Uncharted” is slated to come back to theaters eventually; however, its release may take longer than expected.

In an interview with Deadline, Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven shed light on the ongoing development of the Uncharted sequel. The key factor right now is Tom Holland’s busy schedule. Holland is set to star in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming project and is also expected to return as Peter Parker in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 4. This means he’s tied up for the next couple of years, which pushes back the potential start of production for Uncharted 2. As the script continues to be refined, the plan is to begin filming whenever Holland has some free time, but that doesn’t look likely in the near future.

As a fervent admirer, I’m eagerly anticipating Chris Nolan’s upcoming movie featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya. Once that masterpiece is out, they’re diving straight into the Spider-Man universe. The release dates for these two blockbusters seem to be either on the same day or a week apart. This double feature could well be another cinematic marvel akin to a modern-day Barbenheimer!

To put it simply, given the moderate reception of the first “Uncharted” film on Rotten Tomatoes and its room for improvement, it’s not surprising that Sony is taking their time with the sequel. Despite earning $400 million worldwide in its previous run, a sequel isn’t difficult to justify. However, the extended delay for the next installment might be beneficial for the movie franchise, particularly for enthusiasts of the original video games.

‘Uncharted’ Deserves Another Shot on the Big Screen

Interestingly, the lengthy gap between the sequels might work in favor of the ‘Uncharted’ series overall. One common complaint about the movie was its focus on a younger Nathan Drake, which deviated from where players initially encountered him in the game series. While Tom Holland delivers a commendable performance as the protagonist, he may have felt more at home in the role of the treasure-hunting adventurer with some more time. Despite its success at the box office, it’s essential to prioritize quality over quantity. With video game adaptations becoming increasingly popular and the bar for quality rising, there is room for improvement in the ‘Uncharted’ sequel. This is evident when comparing it to films like ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ that appealed to audiences, as well as more serious narratives such as HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’.

Despite the initial Uncharted film falling short of many fans’ expectations for a live-action adaptation, there were still enough intriguing aspects to merit a second chance for redemption. Characters like Nathan Drake have a significant emotional connection with many viewers, and while Holland may not have been the ideal casting choice in Sony’s eyes, there is potential for him to grow into the role of the charming treasure hunter more convincingly. Mark Wahlberg as Sully was not a complete disappointment either, so if he grows a mustache and adds some gray hair, the Uncharted sequel could surpass its predecessor – and this isn’t intended as an insult.
