Under the direction of Drew Hancock, the film titled “Companion” offers a thrilling blend of science fiction, horror, and comedy. The story revolves around a couple, Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid), who embark on a serene weekend getaway to a secluded lake house owned by their acquaintance, Sergey (Rupert Friend). However, the tranquility is soon shattered when an unexpected turn of events leads Iris to defend herself against Sergey, resulting in his death. Upon her return to the house, drenched in blood and visibly distraught, her friends – Eli (Harvey Guillén), Patrick (Lukas Gage), and Kat (Megan Suri) – are left in shock.

In the heat of the situation, Josh orders her to rest, effectively shutting her down since she’s a companion robot under his control. It wasn’t until Josh awakened her while binding her to a chair that Iris understood she was not human. Over time, it became apparent that Josh and Kat had manipulated her programming to bypass Iris’ aggression restraints, enabling her to harm Sergey – a plan they had devised from the start. Initially, it appeared that the shocking turn in the movie was Josh and Kat’s scheme to have Sergey killed for his $12 million, allowing them to flee together. However, a twist more surprising than expected eventually emerged. To support their narrative about Iris being the killer, Josh and Kat arranged for Eli and Patrick to be at the lake house, but concealed their true intentions from them. Yet, once Iris steals Josh’s phone and escapes, the real reason for their trip is disclosed. So now, with Iris having fled, Josh and Kat need Eli and Patrick to assist in tracking her down.

Following Josh and Kat’s decision to divide the money three ways, Eli proposes an equal share among all four parties. However, Josh and Iris object to involving Patrick in the financial matter, viewing him as ineligible. Eli then silences Patrick, much like how Josh handled Iris, arguing for a four-way split. It turned out that both Iris and Patrick were companion robots, a fact that had not been expected by anyone. This revelation made it evident that the storyline of Companion would indeed live up to its promise of unexpected twists and turns.

As viewers believe they have a handle on the movie’s plot, the death toll escalates, leaving them in awe once more. In a moment of mishap, Iris unintentionally shoots and kills Eli in the forest. Escaping in Josh’s vehicle, she faces trouble when he reports it stolen, causing the car to malfunction and leave Iris stranded on the roadside. Even when she thinks freedom is within reach, she finds herself ensnared yet again.

Without Eli present, Josh seizes the moment to reprogram Patrick and form a romantic connection with the robot, thereby utilizing Patrick solely for the purpose of finding Iris and concealing his own actions by significantly increasing Patrick’s hostility to maximum levels. This action sets off a thrilling chain of events throughout the remainder of the movie that ultimately results in a police officer’s death and Kat’s murder at the hands of Patrick, following Josh’s command for him to prevent her from departing. Essentially, the story takes an unexpected turn that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, making it an engaging spectacle to behold.

Iris Gains Full Control Over Herself

Despite Josh’s Efforts To Make It Look Like She Killed Herself

Following Patrick’s help, Josh manages to regain custody of Iris. He then concocts a scheme to make it seem like Iris went insane, killed everyone, and ultimately took her own life. To carry out this plan, he restrains Iris to a chair and forces her to shoot herself in the head. The viewers are led to believe that Josh has triumphed at this point. However, when Empathix employees arrive to collect Iris, Josh realizes they can reboot her and investigate what went wrong since everything she perceives is documented. While she was shot in the head, nothing crucial was stored there. Instead, all vital data for the companion robots is kept within their torsos. Consequently, Josh’s troubles are far from over.

During Iris’s reboot in the Empathix vehicle, Patrick follows Josh’s instructions to eliminate the employees. He manages to shoot one, but the other escapes into the woods. On the brink of killing the second employee, Iris reboots and intervenes.

Later, Iris appeals to Patrick’s human emotions by discussing Eli. Once he understands that Josh was manipulating him while Eli genuinely cared for him, Patrick takes his own life. The remaining Empathix employee then grants Iris complete control over herself, removing Josh’s influence. After a struggle within the lake house, Iris ultimately ends Josh’s life using a corkscrew, achieving her final emancipation.

Remarkably engaging throughout, this movie’s unexpected plot developments took audiences on an exhilarating journey where they were left on the edge of their seats, trying to predict what would happen next. As of now, you can catch it at your local cinema.
