Saturday Night Live recently marked its 50th anniversary with a grand three-hour special, inviting back some of its most renowned comedic stars. Although some skits missed the mark, here are the standout celebrities and hilarious acts from an evening that took half a century to put together.
On October 11, 1975, Saturday Night Live made its debut, with its 50th season set to air on September 28, 2024. In a series of special episodes, remakes, and performances, the regular Sunday broadcast of Saturday Night Live became a tribute to everyone involved in creating the series. Actors, crew members, stagehands, and teleprompter operators were all honored during SNL’s 50th anniversary special, offering a glamorous salute to the show’s history and the city that has been its home.
‘SNL’ Makes a Callback to Some of the Series’ Past Characters
The 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” was a star-studded event, featuring prominent figures who left their indelible impressions on the show. Names like Steve Martin, Martin Short, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler graced the stage in a procession of fame. Eddie Murphy, Leslie Jones, and Tracy Morgan joined Kenan Thompson as hosts for a Black Jeopardy game. One of the evening’s most hilarious moments unfolded when Eddie Murphy portrayed Tracy Morgan, adorned with a large gold medallion. However, fears that “SNL” might overlook revisiting their iconic Black Jeopardy moment were quickly alleviated when none other than Tom Hanks emerged, reviving his beloved character, Doug.
Mike Myers feels emotional while reprising Linda Richman in a chat with Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler during Coffee Talk, and Miles Teller drops by to discuss his part in the movie “Top Gun 2”.
– Bill Murray and Seth Meyers appear on Weekend Update, with Murray paying tribute to the late Norm McDonald for causing him to ponder a deep question (it’s more impactful if you watch it).
– Murray then unveils the Top 10 anchors of Weekend Update as well as the Number 1 for black anchors.
‘SNL’ 50 Was a Night of Music and Mischief
At night, the musical acts featured Paul McCartney, Lil Wayne, an issue with the microphone, Miley Cyrus alongside Brittany Howard, and Paul Simon joined by Sabrina Carpenter. There was a bit of something for everyone’s taste. In a heartwarming moment, Adam Sandler stepped up to strum the guitar and croon about different cast members who have been part of the show over time.
As a film aficionado, let me share that for those craving a dash more laughter in their tunes, SNL 50 delivered just that! In an extended, entertaining skit, John Mulaney guided Pete Davidson and David Spade on a musical expedition, depicting the tribulations of dwelling in New York City. The scene took a whimsical turn when Adam Driver and Maya Rudolph appeared as a hot dog and heroin, attempting to dissuade Spade and Davidson from relocating to the Big Apple.
In a performance reminiscent of “Hakuna Matata,” Nathan Lane crooned a tune about the risks of cocaine. The musical event saw performances by Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Nick Jonas, among others. One particularly amusing moment was orchestrated by the audience itself. As Kristin Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, and an Elmo-costumed Will Forte serenaded from the starry crowd, Kevin Costner and Jenna Ortega sat in increasing perplexity between them.
At a packed wedding reception filled with many couples, Pedro Pascal, Sabrina Carpenter, and Andy Samberg delivered an unforgettable performance. This skit additionally starred Molly Shannon and Martin Short. In another skit, Will Ferrell appeared as a mustached crooner trying to decide between a pair of sisters. Keith Richards didn’t sing, but made an appearance as himself, asking Amy Poehler and Tina Fey if they knew where he had left his scarf from the ’90s set. Quickly stealing the limelight was Zach Galifianakis (with a scarf around his head) who urged everyone to move on. Other stars gracing this anniversary special included Chris Rock, Chevy Chase, Garret Morris, Molly Shannon, and Woody Harrelson.
Towards the finale of the program, Tom Hanks paid a heartfelt homage to jokes that no longer hold up. After a gentle warning about potentially inappropriate humor, Hanks subtly shifted the blame onto the audience if they found themselves laughing. This was swiftly followed by playful montages featuring content and guests who might have raised eyebrows due to their problematic nature, having been part of the show’s history.
In addition to the special event titled “SNL 50: The Anniversary Special“, television show “SNL” held a 50th anniversary concert, which was recorded at Radio City Music Hall. Notable performers included Miley Cyrus, Cher, Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill, and The Backstreet Boys. Fans can now stream “SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert” on Peacock. As a nod to the 50th anniversary, NBC also rebroadcasted the very first episode of “Saturday Night Live“. Additionally, viewers can explore more behind-the-scenes tales commemorating the creation of “Saturday Night Live” with “SNL 50 Beyond Saturday Night“, available on Peacock as well.
