As a seasoned gamer with a deep-rooted love for cars and racing, I can’t help but be captivated by this unique tribute to the iconic Paris-Dakar Rally-winning Porsche 953. The Dakar Children’s Car, or as I like to call it, the miniature masterpiece, is a testament to the intricate details and dedication that go into creating such an extraordinary piece of art.
A miniature version of the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally-winning Porsche 953, named the Dakar Children’s Car or Dakar Junior, is up for auction at RM Sotheby’s. Created by Halfscale Cars in the UK, this scaled-down replica commemorates the 40th anniversary of the historic victory in the legendary rally race.
René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne’s triumph in the tough 1984 rally, riding in a customized Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 4×4, is honored with this intricately crafted model. The Dakar Junior replicas bear the recognizable Rothmans liveried two-tones, meticulously painted by hand.
Inside this car lies a 400-cc engine, capable of generating around 15 horsepower, enabling it to reach speeds of approximately 50 miles per hour. This same engine is found in the authentic Porsche 911 jr. The vehicle’s technical specifications include rack-and-pinion steering, Brembo brake system, and independent front suspension with coilover shock absorbers. These elements enable the Dakar Junior to navigate rough terrain effortlessly.
In simpler terms, the Dakar Junior’s interior aspires to mimic the opulence of its larger version, boasting two Connolly leather and houndstooth fabric mini bucket seats with lap belts and a detachable Moto-Lita leather steering wheel. Crafting each Dakar Junior requires more than 100 hours of meticulous workmanship. Equipped with headlights, 12-inch wheels, off-road tires, and mud flaps, this scaled-down car is not merely a collectible but an operational off-road plaything.
Beginning on August 15, this magnificent homage to the Paris-Dakar Rally will go up for bidding during RM Sotheby’s Monterey event. Experts predict that it could sell for approximately $30,000 USD.
