Universal Pictures & Illumination Go Bananas for Third Minions Film Set for Summer 2027

Universal Pictures & Illumination Go Bananas for Third Minions Film Set for Summer 2027

As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of animated movies, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that the Minions are getting their third official feature film! The news came as a delightful surprise, especially after the massive success of “Despicable Me 4” at the box office. I still remember the first time I watched the original “Despicable Me” back in 2010 – I was immediately captivated by the witty humor and lovable antics of Gru and his mischievous Minions.

We haven’t seen the last of Gru’s banana-loving underlings. Not by a long shot!

As “Despicable Me 4” rules the box office, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have started producing a new “Minions” spin-off movie. This upcoming film is planned for release on June 30, 2027. Brian Lynch, who penned the script for “Minions” and developed the storyline for “The Rise of Gru,” will once again handle the screenwriting duties. Pierre Coffin, a longtime collaborator in the “Despicable Me” series and the voice behind the Minions, takes on the director’s role. Bill Ryan and Chris Meledandri, Illumination’s founder and CEO, team up to produce this new project.

One week after the release of “Despicable Me 4” in theaters, this news emerges with impressive box office earnings. The movie has already made over $255 million globally, moving the franchise significantly closer to a grand total of $5 billion in worldwide revenue.

Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s Senior Media Analyst, shares his perspective on the enduring appeal of the Minions: “There’s nothing contemptible about the continuing allure of those bothersome, charming, and unstoppable Minions. Their immense stardom is evident, and even as part of an ensemble in the Despicable Me series, they consistently outshine their fellow cast members.”

Before the main Despicable Me franchise, the 2015 film Minions brought in a billion dollars and ranks as the sixth biggest earner among animated films. The more recent release, Minions: The Rise of Gru, set in the 1970s during Gru’s childhood, made over $940 million, an impressive figure despite facing financial challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when it came out in summer 2022.

There have been rumors before about potential new journeys for the Minions following the success of “Despicable Me 4.” But now, we have solid information that the series will grow past this upcoming film.
