Red Hulk can sometimes be a hassle, but he’s an enjoyable character. Originating from the second volume of “Hulk” in 2008, specifically issue #1, he was later unveiled as Bruce Banner’s adversary and father-in-law, General Thunderbolt Ross. Initially, this character gained the power to become Red Hulk due to manipulation by criminal organizations A.I.M. and the Intelligencia, in a bid to keep up with the original Hulk. Later on, Four-star General Robert Maverick assumed control of the character in “U.S.Avengers #1” from 2017, before Joe Fixit made an appearance as a variation of Red Hulk in “Immortal Hulk #45” in 2021.
Red Hulk has made his first appearance across various media platforms, with a total of 11 video games featuring him. In contrast, his presence has been limited to just five movies and TV shows. His latest appearance was in “Captain America: Brave New World,” where he was played by Harrison Ford. Initially, the Russo Brothers contemplated including Red Hulk in both “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” but eventually decided against it, feeling that the character merited his own spotlight. Regardless, fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to see him appear on screen in live-action for the first time.

‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ (2012 – 2017)
In the series called “Ultimate Spider-Man,” Peter Parker faces his regular crop of foes during the initial two seasons. This includes Norman Osborn, who aims to produce an army of Spider-Men using Peter’s genetic material, and Doctor Octopus, whose goal is to gather all villains to take down the superhero definitively. Later on, Nick Fury enlists Peter and assigns him the role of leading a team of heroes called the New Warriors.
Initially, Red Hulk makes an appearance as a competitor in the ‘Contest of Champions’ organized by the Grandmaster. Later on, he renounces his wicked deeds and becomes a member of the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. team.
Red Hulk to the Rescue
Instead of viewers choosing a battle between Red Hulk and the superheroes over friendly chats, it’s intriguing to witness this colossal figure acting courteously, even though his arrogance remains unchanged, with an ego as vast as his biceps. Nevertheless, despite his somewhat irritating behavior, Red Hulk demonstrates great usefulness within the group.
Red Hulk’s military past has equipped him with an array of high-tech weaponry that he generously lends to his teammates. Among these are a compact minigun, a Gatling Laser Cannon, as well as missile launchers from the Red Hulk-Buster. He’s also been known to wield a potent gamma rapid fire cannon and gamma grenades in other instances.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ (2025)
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam Wilson takes on the responsibilities of the new Captain America wholeheartedly. Concurrently, President Thaddeus Ross (played by Harrison Ford) faces international disputes regarding newly discovered adamantium deposits on Celestial Island. As events unfold, the nefarious Dr. Samuel Sterns, also known as the Leader, starts plotting against Ross. The situation escalates, leading to Ross undergoing a transformation into the Red Hulk, instigating a significant confrontation with Captain America.
The Movie is Economical with Red Hulk
The movie elicits a mixture of sweet and sour emotions towards Red Hulk among viewers. Interestingly, Thaddeus Ross stands out in this production more than any other live-action portrayal, not merely due to Harrison Ford’s performance but also because his character is developed more extensively compared to previous MCU movies. It’s engaging to witness him grapple with global politics and work towards improving the relationship between the government and superheroes.
Contrary to the marketing hype, the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” features minimal Red Hulk action as promised. It takes quite a while for Ross to turn into the beast and when he does, he’s not malevolent but rather enraged. This isn’t quite the spectacle audiences anticipated.

‘Avengers Assemble’ (2013 – 2019)
Originating from the popularity of the 2012 film “The Avengers”, “Avengers Assemble” chronicles the globe-saving escapades of several Marvel superheroes, primarily seen through the perspective of Falcon, who recently joined the ranks of the Avengers.
In the first season, the main characters confront Red Skull prior to tackling Thanos in the second season. Ultorn comes next, followed by Kang and Killmonger. Towards the end of the series, Truman Marsh (who was hiding as Ultron) assumes Hulk’s role, becoming Red Hulk when he is made the group’s government representative.
Same Old Ross
On the show, Red Hulk is occasionally controlled by others, yet remains valuable in general. His most impressive moments occur when he collaborates with the Avengers instead of being antagonistic. Frequently, his sparring matches with Captain America about strategies are entertaining to watch. As a former military commander, Red Hulk thinks he’s always right; however, Cap often disregards him due to his tendency to act before thinking.
In the course of the series, the Red Hulk takes part in significant skirmishes against Ultron, Thanos, and Kang the Conqueror, demonstrating his strength in every encounter. Although Hulk is also present, it’s comforting to have an additional powerful ally on board.

‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ (2010 – 2012)
In the first season of “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” the Avengers face off against adversaries such as The Leader, Baron Zemo, Kang the Conqueror, and Ultron. They also battle criminal organizations like A.I.M. and Hydra, and Loki masterminds a prison break to cause chaos on Earth. In season 2, Ms. Marvel and the Vision become part of the team, fighting against enemies like Doctor Doom, Red Hulk, and the Red Skull. Additionally, they combat alien threats such as the Skrulls, the Kree, and Galactus.
Endless Red-Smashing
If you’re looking for a thrilling showdown between Hulk and Red Hulk, I recommend watching “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes “, where General Ross chases Banner relentlessly, bordering on obsession. He’s willing to sacrifice anyone if it means getting his hands on the Hulk. This ruthless attitude is most evident in the episode “The Deadliest Man Alive”, where he intentionally hurls a boat filled with people at the Hulk, justifying the casualties as collateral damage from war.
The show offers an intricate history for the character, tracing back to when the Red Hulk is injected with a modified Hulk’s blood by the Winter Soldier onboard the Hellcarrier. From that moment, it’s a whirlwind of destruction as he wreaks havoc on the ship and obliterates nearly everything in his path. You’re sure to enjoy the wreckage!

‘Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.’ (2013 – 2015)
Troubled by the low public opinion towards them in the show “Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H”, these gamma-powered champions find themselves labeled as monsters by the general public. In an attempt to alter this perception, they decide to join a reality TV program where they’ll be under constant surveillance. The team, which includes Hulk, She-Hulk, Skaar, Red Hulk, and A-Bomb, form the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Their goal is to demonstrate their greatness to the world. However, during their journey, Skaar is unmasked as an agent of the Leader. Nonetheless, with time, the Agents manage to persuade him to turn over a new leaf.
The Most Likable Red Hulk
In this interpretation, the Red Hulk stands out among others as he opts for a complete battle outfit instead of just relying on anger and shorts, giving him a tougher, more intimidating appearance. Additionally, he has a fondness for weapons that surpasses other versions due to his background in the military.
Despite Red Hulk’s affinity for weapons, it doesn’t diminish his strength. In fact, when the situation calls for it, he demonstrates remarkable ability. For instance, he employs his gamma energy to neutralize Green Skull and Hydra Leader’s gamma weapon by draining its power, rendering it ineffective. Incidentally, this action also reverted Green Skull back into Red Skull.
