In his view for ‘Finding Your Roots’, Henry Louis Gates Jr. states that we explore global history by focusing on one ancestor at a time. This approach not only reveals an individual’s family tree, but also enlightens the American public about a lesser-known aspect of world history.
As Finding Your Roots concludes its 11th season on April 8, host Neil deGrasse Tyson is delving into the history of his own family, uncovering their story in the captivating and introspective manner that the show is known for.
What’s been the most emotional discovery for you, personally, this season?
Unveiling the true identity of my long-lost great-great grandfather has been a long-standing family mystery that began when I was 9 years old at the funeral of my maternal grandfather, Edward St. Lawrence Gates. He was so pale we nicknamed him Casper. … My father returned us to our family home that my great-great-grandmother had bought for $1,400 in cash in 1870. She was a former slave until 1862 and had five children who all appeared white. She kept the identity of their shared father a secret until her death, revealing only to her children, including my great-grandfather, that they all shared the same white father. … The resolution to this 150-year-old enigma will be revealed to millions on Tuesday, April 8, making it a truly emotional moment.
Reflecting on the hundreds of stories you’ve helped tell, what are you proudest of?
We’ve been researching the origin of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry from Eastern Europe. When people ask about the most challenging areas in genealogy, I often mention African Americans due to the lack of documentation caused by slavery. However, I also find it difficult when it comes to Eastern European Jews. In fact, we’ve contributed funds for record digitization. A few years back, when I traced Mandy Patinkin’s family history, he was unaware that any relatives perished during the Holocaust. This is a common occurrence as many people who emigrated — similar to African Americans — were brave enough to take a chance and travel alone, often leaving someone behind.
Is there a commonality to the people you interview?
The main ideas hidden within “Finding Your Roots” are:
1. America’s greatness lies in its status as a nation of immigrants, even our indigenous ancestors migrated here 15,000 years ago from the Bering Strait. In essence, everyone here originates from somewhere else.
2. At the genetic level, despite our apparent physical differences, we share a striking similarity of 99.99%. We must acknowledge these two messages promptly.
“Finding Your Roots” conveys that America’s strength comes from being a nation built by immigrants, and even our Native Americans migrated to this continent thousands of years ago. Additionally, genetically speaking, we are almost identical despite outward differences, and it is crucial for us to understand this.

In the previous year, you were nominated for an Emmy award in the show “Finding Your Roots”. Can you share what this recognition meant to you?
It’s quite a remarkable milestone to secure our initial nomination for “Finding Your Roots” on its 10th anniversary – there’s simply nothing to top that! I started teaching at the age of 26 and have two former students who have made it big in Hollywood: Jodie Foster and Angela Bassett. At an Emmy event we attended, Angela was awarded her Primetime Emmy, which left me thinking, “Well, I never realized Angela Bassett hadn’t received an Emmy before?” Then, at another Emmy ceremony, Jodie stepped up to the microphone, and I thought, “She must have racked up quite a collection of these awards.” However, she shared that this was her first win after being nominated four times. This moment made me truly understand what people mean when they say it’s an honor just to be recognized.
Could you share the story behind the video of you expertly performing the dance routine from Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” during the Super Bowl, which has become quite popular online?
During the filming of Brittany Griner in Miami, we carried out that task, which was emotionally draining. I’d switch between researching the father’s and mother’s sides of the family tree, taking breaks for lunch, then resuming. This process usually takes around five hours, sometimes even longer. I must acknowledge the efforts of our exceptional social media producer who asked me, “Can you manage this task?” With my background in dancing, I observed and followed along. A week later, she informed me that it had gone viral, garnering 1.1 million views on Instagram and 1.6 million on Facebook. It was amusing. Since then, numerous people have emailed me. I couldn’t believe the number of people interested in such content, as I don’t even have an account.
