Over the course of five gripping seasons, the 2005 sensationally popular crime drama “Prison Break” held viewers captivated through its richly developed characters, exhilarating plot twists, and intricately woven storylines. The esteemed series revolves around brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield, who find themselves imprisoned, with Lincoln wrongly accused of a murder he didn’t commit and sentenced to death. In an effort to escape the penitentiary, they devise an intricate plan.
Michael deliberately becomes imprisoned together with his elder brother to free him and clear his reputation. Their journey takes them through dangerous encounters, but they also gain trustworthy allies. The series, which gained popularity between 2005 and 2009 over four captivating seasons, later continued with a 2009 television film and the concluding fifth season in 2017. Notable stars like Dominic Purcell, Wentworth Miller, and Sarah Wayne Callies graced the show. In celebration of its twentieth anniversary, here’s a guide to the cast and characters for Prison Break.
Dominic Purcell as Lincoln Burrows
Dominic Purcell plays the pivotal role in a tense crime series as Lincoln Burrows, an individual who dropped out of high school, served time for crimes, and was unjustly convicted of murdering the brother of the U.S. Vice President. Sentenced to death for a heinous act he didn’t commit, Lincoln is profoundly devoted to his son L.J. and sibling Michael. When his younger brother unexpectedly arrives at the same prison, awaiting execution, the two hatch an escape plan to exonerate Lincoln.
Three days before the start of production, Purcell was unexpectedly selected for the role, during a time when he was still starring in the temporary series “North Shore.” Although the creator of the series, Paul Scheuring, initially had doubts about Purcell’s suitability for the part, his exceptional audition and arrival on set with a shaved head left Scheuring amazed by his resemblance to Wenworth Miller. Notably, Purcell had previously played Drake/Dracula in “Blade: Trinity” and has since become a regular in popular TV shows like “Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash,” and “Batwoman.
Wentworth Miller as Michael Scofield
Driven by the desire to exonerate Lincoln and thwart his impending execution, Michael Scofield resolves to save his life, a decision that lands him in prison for robbing a bank under duress. Imprisoned at Fox River State Penitentiary alongside his brother, Michael – who was once an accomplished structural engineer – embarks on an intricate scheme to free Lincoln, utilizing his keen eye and unyielding spirit to navigate the challenges ahead. Michael meticulously conceals his weaknesses and genuine feelings from the fellow inmates to safeguard both their lives.
In a notable career shift, Wentworth Miller gained widespread popularity when he took on the role of Michael Scofield, the clever character from the hit series “Prison Break.” This powerful portrayal earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. Before his breakthrough, Miller had already made appearances in the ABC miniseries “Dinotopia” and later clinched the role that significantly marked his career trajectory in “Prison Break.” Subsequently, he continued to shine on television screens with his performances in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “The Flash,” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” Additionally, Miller also played Chris Redfield in the film “Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Amaury Nolasco as Fernando Sucre
At Fox River State Penitentiary for aggravated battery, Fernando Sucre serves as both a cellmate and confidant to Michael, having been betrayed by a man over a love interest, Maricruz Delgado. Initially reluctant to aid in Michael’s prison break due to his short sentence, Fernando reconsiders upon learning that Maricruz is pregnant and decides to pursue reuniting with her. Throughout the series, Fernando demonstrates unwavering loyalty towards Michael and becomes a trusted ally.
Actor Amaury Nolasco, recognized for his roles, is particularly famous for portraying Julius ‘Orange Julius’ in 2 Fast 2 Furious and various other productions like Transformers, Street Kings, Max Payne and A Good Day to Die Hard. Apart from these films, he has also made significant appearances on television shows such as Southland, Burn Notice, Rizzoli & Isles. His most recent performance can be seen in the Apple TV+ series, Land of Women, sharing screen time with Eva Longoria.
Robert Knepper as Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell
One notable villain from the TV show “Prison Break” is Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell, portrayed by Robert Knepper. He’s a ruthless and masterfully manipulative psychopath who’s doing time for horrendous acts like kidnapping and murder. Throughout the series, he plays a despicable role as a villain. When T-Bag learns about Michael’s escape plan by finding his dug hole, he coerces others to let him participate in the scheme. However, he continues to be an unpredictable and potentially dangerous presence among the group.
Regarding the complex character T-Big, Knepper had earlier stated, “I never portray him as a typical racist or redneck. Instead, he’s depicted as clever and intelligent,” a portrayal that eventually earned him a place among the most remarkable television antagonists ever created. Since his days on Prison Break, Knepper has graced the screens in films such as Hitman, Transporter 3, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, while also making appearances on shows including Heroes, Shameless, iZombie, and Twin Peaks.
Sarah Wayne Callies as Sara Trancredi
The kindly physician at Fox River State Penitentiary, Sarah Trancredi, who was deeply involved with Michael Scofield and had a significant role, was beautifully played by Sarah Wayne Callies. Her character grappled with immense guilt due to her involvement in Michael and Lincoln’s daring escape plot. Being the daughter of Illinois Governor Frank Tancredi, Sara forged a profound and meaningful bond with Michael and eventually chose to flee with him. In an unexpected twist during Season 3, she appeared to meet her end, only to be resurrected and rejoin forces with Michael later on.
Following her stellar performance on “Prison Break”, Callies went on to star in another popular TV series: the gripping post-apocalyptic drama “The Walking Dead”. For three seasons, she played Rick Grimes’ wife, Lori Grimes, and Carl’s mother. This blockbuster show became AMC’s highest-rated program ever. Since then, Callies has appeared in shows like “Colony”, “Letterkenny”, “The Long Road Home”, and “The Company You Keep”. She has also acted in films such as “Black November”, “Into the Storm”, and “The Show”.
William Fichtner as Alexander Mahone
A seasoned actor named William Fichtner entered the cast of ‘Prison Break‘ during its second season. He took on the role of FBI agent Alexander Mahone, who was assigned to track down Michael, Lincoln, and their fellow escaped convicts (known as the Fox River Eight), after they broke out from prison. In the series, Mahone is shown committing cold-blooded murders among the fugitives, and his obsession with capturing Michael and his brother grows so intense that it affects his mental state, leading him to develop a drug addiction. Eventually, Mahone’s addiction lands him in prison along with the rest of the group.
Over a long and successful career, Fichtner has consistently featured in numerous popular TV shows and movies, including blockbusters like “Armageddon,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Crash,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and “12 Strong.” He’s also appeared on series such as “Entourage,” “Empire,” “Mom,” “Shooter,” and “The Company You Keep.” The experienced actor is now preparing to act alongside Elizabeth McGovern in the upcoming AMC series, “The Talamasca,” which is the third part of the Anne Rice Immortal Universe.
Marshall Allman as Lincoln “L.J.” Burrows, Jr.
Lincoln’s cherished adolescent son, L.J. (Marshall Allman), grapples with his intricate emotions and bond with his imprisoned father, who he felt was absent during his upbringing following Lincoln’s divorce from his mother. Over time, they manage to mend their connection as L.J. starts visiting him at Fox River. However, Lincoln attempts to keep his son at arm’s length to shield him from potential dangers, a caution that proves justified when the teenager becomes the focus of an attempted framing for murder, similar to what his father experienced.
Apart from his roles in “Prison Break,” Allman has an impressive TV resume. He played notable characters such as Tommy Mickens in “True Blood” on HBO, Julian Howe in “Bates Motel,” and Milo Khoury in “Humans.” Additionally, he’s had guest appearances on shows like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Justified,” and “Sons of Anarchy.” In films, he has been seen in “Blue Like Jazz,” “Thunder Road,” and “The Wolf of Snow Hollow.
Wade Williams as Brad Bellick
In the television series Fox River, the chief correctional officer, Brad Bellick (played by Wade Williams), often serves as a troublesome figure during the early episodes. He displays questionable behavior, including mistreating prisoners, taking bribes, and engaging in unethical conduct as the primary prison guard. Despite nearly thwarting Michael’s escape plan, Bellick eventually transforms into an unexpected ally for the inmate. The corrupt officer’s character undergoes a redemption arc by the end of the series, providing closure to the dramatic narrative.
Before my character graced the screens in “Prison Break,” I had already made a name for myself on the beloved sitcom “The Bernie Mac Show” where I played Father Cronin. My small-screen presence was quite extensive, with appearances in hit shows like “Charmed,” “Six Feet Under,” “Bones,” and “The Black List.”
In addition to my work on television, I’ve had a successful career as a voice actor. I lent my voice to Harvey Dent/Two-Face in the two-part films “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns,” and also contributed to various animated projects such as “The Hole,” “Superman: Unbound,” and “Beware the Batman.
Paul Adelstein as Paul Kellerman
Paul Kellerman, a dedicated Secret Service agent, exhibits unwavering loyalty towards Vice President Caroline Reynolds. He stands steadfast by her side, supporting her political aspirations, sometimes to an excessive degree. His assignment at Fox River involves supervising Lincoln’s execution, but he finds himself unwittingly involved in the miscarriage of justice against an innocent prisoner. Over time, he carries out many of the Vice President’s orders and eventually transforms into a ruthless assassin, justifying his actions as necessary for the preservation of his nation.
Paul Adelstein played the antagonist consistently during the show’s entirety, a role he later reprised when he was chosen to play pediatrician Cooper Freedman in the medical series Private Practice.Adelstein is recognized for his portrayals of Leo Bergen in Scandal, Jake Novak in Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, and Jason Crawford in Chicago P.D..
