The second season of “Severance” is progressing nicely, and the plot is becoming increasingly intense. Meanwhile, Mark (Adam Scott) recalls seeing a wedding photo and recognizes that Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman) is his counterpart’s wife Gemma, who he believed had passed away. However, his counterpart remains unaware of this revelation. He remembers exclaiming “she’s alive!” but is unsure about the identity of the woman he was referring to.
As a film enthusiast myself, I’m immersed in solving this mystery and brainstorming some rather unconventional strategies. In the heat of executing one of these ideas, I encounter a woman named Reghabi, played by Karen Aldridge – a character that some viewers may remember from Season 1. She holds significant weight in the storyline and could potentially alter the direction of our beloved show.
Who Is Reghabi, and What Do You Need to Remember About Her?
In their initial encounter, Mark encounters Reghabi who informs him that she is the one responsible for installing his severance chip at Lumon. It’s also worth noting that she was the individual who conducted Petey’s (Yul Vazquez) reintegration process, supposedly the first time she attempted such a procedure. Mark became familiar with Reghabi after discovering Petey’s cell phone in his basement. Upon noticing her number on the phone and their previous interactions, he reached out to her. Their meeting took place at an old laboratory building where she elaborated on the events that led to Petey’s knowledge of Mark.
During their discussion, Doug Graner (Michael Cumpsty) abruptly interrupts, claiming to be a colleague of Mark’s. However, as Mark’s alter ego, he couldn’t confirm this. Reghabi, on the other hand, suspects him and attacks from behind. She ends up killing him with a baseball bat, sending Mark home with promises to contact him later so they can complete what Petey had begun. But after that encounter, she disappears from sight.
Reghabi Reappears in ‘Severance’ Season 2
Mark and his sister Devon (Jen Tullock) have thought of a method they believe will convey a message to his inner self. One day at work, he parks and sets the timer on his watch. He records the time it takes him from entering the building, passing through security, and riding up the elevator. Upon reaching his workspace, he notes how long it takes from placing his belongings in his locker to settling at his desk.
Could it be that he believes if he manages to hold an image before his eyes for a prolonged period, even after his consciousness has switched from the outer to inner self, he can signal his inner self for answers? He thinks his inner self could then find a method to interact with him.
In a car, he rehearses with a lightbox displaying “who is alive?” He covers himself with a blanket, studies the image, and times how long the impression remains. However, when he lifts the blanket, there’s a woman before his vehicle. She seems to understand his attempt, possibly having witnessed others trying. And promptly debunks his illusion that it won’t succeed.
Reghabi, who has performed the severance procedure on Mark and is well-known for her expertise in this field, informs him that his pupils dilate instantly when he switches from outie to innie. This dilation would blur the image almost instantaneously.
Reghabi Gives Mark Some Answers
She tells him that his idea, though it appears brilliant, won’t actually function, and there’s a real risk of causing harm to his eyesight. To clarify this for him, she explains that the only viable solution is to be in his place, which involves the process of reintegration. This was the method used on Petey, making it possible for his outer self to acknowledge Mark and recall details about work.
In Season 2, it’s significant that Reghabi discloses a crucial fact to Mark’s character: Gemma is alive, or at least she was when Reghabi last saw her. This revelation leaves Mark feeling devastated and confused as to why Reghabi didn’t tell him earlier. She clarifies that their previous encounter was cut short, and she hadn’t had the opportunity to share this news with him then.
She suggests that he (Mark) may find a chance of reuniting with himself if they work together to find Gemma and uncover the mystery surrounding her. She offers to help him in this process. Without needing further persuasion, Mark consents saying “yes, go ahead”, indicating his readiness for the reunion should everything turn out as planned.
The episode concludes with Mark’s external consciousness responding to a series of questions about both his personal and professional lives during the initial stages of the reintegration process. At first, there seems to be some confusion regarding his internal experiences, but gradually he starts having glimpses of his workplace, indicating that the two aspects of his personality are slowly coming together again.
Is the Reintegration Procedure Safe?
From the moment he interacts with Mark, it’s evident that Petey is unwell. He appears sickly. Later, at a convenience store, Petey suddenly falls ill and dies shortly thereafter. It seems he may have been experiencing reintegration illness. If Reghabi was aware of this, it raises concerns about her decision to attempt the procedure again on Mark, unless she understands what went wrong with Petey’s process and can rectify it this time.
It’s equally plausible that Petey fell ill due to factors unrelated to his reintegration process, or perhaps there are aspects of the procedure unknown to Reghabi. The mystery surrounding Petey’s condition is one of many intriguing aspects of the series. However, it seems clear that Reghabi has chosen to leave Lumon and is sincerely trying to help. It remains to be seen if the reintegration process will work on Mark. While her intentions appear genuine, fans are curious about what made her change her mind and act against her employer, a company known for integrating patients.
