Unstoppable and Blockchain.com Collaborate for Web3 Domains

As an analyst with a background in technology and domain name markets, I’m excited about this new partnership between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com. The collaboration aims to introduce the “.blockchain” domain, which could potentially become one of the first Web3 domains compatible with web browsers and email, making it more accessible to a broader audience.

Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com are teaming up to develop one of the initial Web3 domain names that can function with web browsers and emails. They’re planning to submit this innovation to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for approval.

As a crypto investor, I’m excited about the upcoming collaboration between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com. Together, they plan to introduce the “.blockchain” domain, with Blockchain.com taking the lead in applying for its registration during the next generic top-level domain (gTLD) round.

As a researcher involved in this project, I’m thrilled to announce that we’re partnering with @blockchain to make the .blockchain domain accessible to everyone. In preparation for ICANN’s gTLD initiative next year, we’re working closely with them to DNS-enable this Web3 domain. This collaboration is a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology more deeply into the internet infrastructure.

As a crypto investor excited about the upcoming development, I can tell you that starting from next year, the application window for the .blockchain domain will open in April 2026. This announcement follows the release of the Applicant’s Guidebook. If our application is successful, this new domain will join ICANN-registered gTLDs such as .com, .net, and .org. Leveraging Blockchain.com’s massive user base of over 40 million verified users, we stand a strong chance in this process. To date, Blockchain.com has played a pivotal role by facilitating the creation of more than 90 million crypto wallets and managing over $1.2 trillion in transactions.

COO of Unstoppable Domains, Sandy Carter, expressed her excitement about the collaboration with Blockchain.com: “We’re delighted to begin this venture together, and our first project will involve creating a Web3 domain to trial and offer an affordable solution. This partnership is significant as we prepare for the upcoming ICANN initiatives.”

Bridging Web2 and Web3

In a move similar to Ethereum Name Service (ENS), this partnership adopts a strategy by integrating “on-chain .box domains” in our system, which became available through ENS in April. ICANN has approved the use of the .box top-level domain (gTLD), making it the first of its kind to be included alongside .eth within our manager application. These .box domains are discoverable and indexed by major browsers such as Google Chrome and Safari, and they’re compatible with popular email services.

In the realm of Web3, domain names serve as an accessible alternative to the intricate Domain Name System (DNS), translating user-friendly labels like “alice.eth” into complex crypto addresses. The partnership between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com could mark the beginning of more Web3 Top Level Domains (TLDs) acquiring their corresponding Web2 counterparts, thereby narrowing the divide between advanced Web3 domains and the conventional internet.
