In our modern era, it is quite the common occurrence to find social messaging apps gracing the headlines with their mischievous deeds. At times, they are the chosen instruments for the orchestration of various misdeeds, and at others, they are the subject of much consternation regarding the delicate matter of users’ privacy. Companies such as Meta, the proud owner of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, frequently find themselves at the center of such storms.
In a curious twist of events, the Trump administration found itself in a spot of bother when it was discovered that members of the President’s esteemed cabinet were utilizing Signal to plot their strategies in Yemen. While there was no talk of hacks or backdoors, the incident did raise a few eyebrows regarding the security of Signal and the wisdom of discussing classified matters over such apps.
Apple’s recent stance on the matter of end-to-end encrypted cloud storage in the UK has also caused a stir. Instead of providing a convenient backdoor for the government, they have chosen to cease offering the service altogether. This move highlights the power tech companies wield over our personal data and privacy.
On the 58th episode of The Agenda podcast, the learned hosts Ray Salmond and Jonathan DeYoung engaged in a lively discussion with Kee Jefferys, the technical co-founder of Sessions. They explored how this decentralized, encrypted messaging app endeavors to shield users’ privacy and data from prying eyes.
Decentralize, or else the writing is on the wall
Unbeknownst to many, by simply downloading and utilizing these messaging apps, one inadvertently grants the app and its operator carte blanche to track one’s location, peruse one’s contacts, and retain records of one’s conversations. A most alarming state of affairs, indeed!
Even when the app operator vows to refrain from such behaviors, if the data is stored on a mere one or two servers, the risk of a breach is ever-present. A hacker’s delight, one might say.
When queried about Apple’s bold decision, Jeffreys opined that it was unlikely an isolated event. “Countries are increasingly adopting this notion of compelling applications to incorporate backdoors and rounding up developers of open-source code,” he lamented.
“Consider the case of Durov, the founder of Telegram, who was apprehended in France. Despite his innocence, the French government saw fit to arrest him due to the app’s misuse. A most concerning precedent, to be sure.”
Jeffreys went on to explain the virtues of Session, which employs E2EE, requires no phone number for registration, and uses Onion routing to mask IP addresses. He extolled the virtues of blockchain as an optimal solution for decentralization and hardcoded security.
Jeffreys elaborated:
“With Session, your IP address remains hidden from the nodes storing your messages, and the network is decentralized. There is no central server housing all messages; instead, there is a vast network of approximately 2,200 nodes that temporarily store your messages. Thus, it is censorship-resistant and conceals a wealth of metadata.”
For those seeking to enhance their privacy, Jefferys recommended taking “simple steps to protect oneself from hackers and corporate intruders.” He suggested a thorough review and cleanup of one’s social media presence, removing any incriminating or revealing posts.
