Viewers had already anticipated that Joel McHale would join the Yellowjackets team for Season 3. Now, information about his character has been disclosed. In a jaw-dropping twist during Episode 6, two individuals – a man and a woman – mysteriously appeared in the wilderness alongside the women. However, it wasn’t until Episode 7 that we learned there was an additional male character among them, portrayed by McHale.
Could they just be lounging, as if they were leisurely camping in the woods? This unexpected turn raises more questions than it resolves. The subsequent events will leave audiences stunned to the bone, hinting at the fact that these women may have ventured further into madness than anyone could have guessed.
Who Are the Three People in the Wilderness?
Reflecting on the chilling turn of events in Episode 6 titled “Thanksgiving (Canada),” two individuals unexpectedly arrive at a bonfire, where the women (including Travis) were joyfully feasting on Ben’s cooked remains, an act that stands among the most heinous crimes the group had ever committed on the show. Upon glancing to the side, one of them discovers Ben’s decapitated head, causing him to recoil in terror and exclaim, “What the hell?” The ensuing sequence took everyone by surprise.
In a different wording: Courtney Eaton’s character, Lottie, approaches him swiftly from behind, wielding an axe. She strikes his head, causing the axe to pierce through as he collapses onto the ground below. The scene is filled with terror, and McHale’s character, hidden nearby, responds by firing an arrow that hits Jenna Burgess’s character, Melissa, in the chest. In response, the two women give chase, while the remaining man and woman flee for their lives. These three individuals are later introduced in Episode 7, “Croak,” which delves into their storyline three days prior to their confrontation with the ladies.
What Was the Trio Doing in the Wilderness?
Initially introduced are Edwin (portrayed by Nelson Franklin) and Hannah, both academic researchers focusing on the behaviors of frogs during courtship. Assigned to immerse themselves in nature for half a year, they were accompanied by Kodi (McHale), who served as their wilderness guide. They equipped the area with cameras, documenting frog activities, and collected specimens in jars to further investigate them back at their temporary camp.
The discovered supplies, such as tents, essential items, food, and a satellite phone for emergency contact, were set up by the team. Hannah hints at where the protein bars came from when Edwin mentions his concern about running out of food, suggesting they were left behind by the previous team. Furthermore, it is clarified that “KUH” written on the case represents the initials of the university.
The relationship triangle among them is intriguing. Edwin and Hannah are in a romantic relationship, leaving Kodi on the sidelines, which seems to be an unfamiliar position for him. Kodi perceives that Hannah harbors a small affection for him, as he is the ruggedly attractive survivalist who contrasts sharply with his boyfriend. Kodi embodies the rebellious James Dean persona, while Edwin serves as Hannah’s comfort zone. Hannah’s adoring glances hint at fantasies she has about Kodi, despite her obvious affection for Edwin.
In response, Kodi skillfully taps into Hannah’s evident fascination. Being tall, dark, and good-looking, he is aware of his charm. Moreover, his ability to survive in the wilderness only adds to his allure, making it clear that Hannah admires him. Edwin notices this as well, understanding her feelings towards Kodi’s charisma are innocent, yet natural. Despite a hint of mild jealousy, he remains unfazed.
When Kodi persuades them to partake in marijuana use with him, they become intoxicated and begin playfully wrestling within the tent. As they jostle over the phone receiver, the line disconnects. Kodi remains unfazed as he assumes there’s no need for help before their research project deadline, but they grow anxious, feeling stranded without a connection to home for six months.
Following this incident, the trio find themselves lounging when they overhear the boisterous singing and cheering of women nearby. Intrigued, they decide to investigate, only to stumble upon these bewildered women instead. Upon sight, some of the women think these strangers might be their means of escape. However, their survival instinct, which has been their constant companion since the crash, takes over, and they become the hunters.
What Happens to Hannah and Kodi?
In this episode, it’s not definitively shown whether Hannah or Kodi are alive, but it seems they may not have made it through. As for Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), one of the standout characters from Yellowjackets, she’s currently living in a motel due to her fear that someone might be after her and the other women. In a later scene, we see Callie (Sarah Desjardin) showing her mother a video they found at their doorstep, expressing regret for keeping it hidden.
Shauna seeks help from Van (Lauren Ambrose) to locate a device capable of playing it. Upon finding it, they both hear Hannah’s terrified scream after Lottie murders Edwin. Later, when Shauna listens individually, she discovers additional content on the recording: a message Hannah left for her presumed daughter, expressing her love for her. It appears that this child ultimately received the message, and some speculate that this could be the enigmatic character Hilary Swank portrays.
It seems that Van implies that only they or deceased individuals know the events depicted in the video. This strongly suggests not only Hannah’s death but also Kodi’s. However, the mystery remains as to how this tape was taken out of the wilderness and ended up being accessed by, most likely, Hannah’s adult daughter.
In the wild, Kodi yearns to continue his run, while Hannah believes it’s wiser to return to their campsite. They part ways, and Hannah conceals herself fearfully, worried the other women might discover her presence. It is during this period of hiding that she covertly records something.
