As a fan who has journeyed through the waves of time with Ryuichi Sakamoto‘s music, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The title “seeing sound, hearing time” resonates deeply with me, as it encapsulates the essence of Sakamoto’s work that has been a constant companion in my life.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is set to unveil a fresh exhibition celebrating the groundbreaking artistry of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. Entitled “seeing sound, hearing time“, this display features grand installations that offer a peek into the creative realm of this multitalented artist, broadening the horizons of his sonic, spatial, and temporal imagination.
This exhibition is the first in Japan to focus entirely on Sakamoto’s groundbreaking works and audiovisual explorations. It will showcase some of his most renowned pieces along with new creations specifically conceived for this event. Spread across multiple floors, a sunken terrace, and the museum courtyard, the exhibition will also include collaborations with Shiro Takatani, Daito Manabe, Carsten Nicolai, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zakkubalan, Toshio Iwai, and Fujiko Nakaya.
1952 saw the birth of Sakamoto in Tokyo. This influential figure reshaped the zeitgeist with groundbreaking work spanning music, cinema, art, and activism. He paved the way for advancements in J-pop, electronic, ambient, and avant-garde classical genres, accruing an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Golden Globes throughout his career. Despite his passing in March 2023, his impact lingers across audio and visual creations as his artistic genius continues to resonate.
The exhibition titled “Feeling Sounds, Perceiving Time” is scheduled to debut in Tokyo on December 21, 2024, and will remain open until March 30, 2025. For further details regarding ticket sales and visiting times, please visit the museum’s official website.
