As a space-age watch enthusiast with a penchant for the unusual and the avant-garde, I must say that the URWERK UR-230 Polaris has truly caught my eye! Growing up, I was captivated by the sleek, futuristic designs of sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and this watch is a stunning embodiment of that aesthetic.
URWERK has revealed the second edition in its 230 collection: the UR-230 Polaris. This latest watch presents a bright white tone and a fresh material within the series, deviating from URWERK’s usual range of black, gray, and subdued tones.
Made out of a unique blend of fiberglass-infused ceramic, the 44.81mm case presents a novel polar viewpoint, introducing a vibrant new vibe to the assortment. This development continues the legacy of the UR-230 “Eagle,” which was exclusively crafted from TPT carbon, signifying a substantial change in design philosophy while preserving its technical foundation.
The UR-230 Polaris sports a multi-layered composite made primarily of ceramics, enclosed within a polymer casing that includes layers of woven ceramic fabric reinforced with fiberglass threads. This composite is then coated in white resin, creating a intricate, iridescent appearance that adjusts with light and angle, surrounding the nearly entirely black UR-7.30 caliber.
Martin Frei, as art director and co-founder of URWERK, likens the white casing of the UR-230 Polaris to the aesthetics found in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the design of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. In these instances, white serves a vital role for heat protection in outer space. This timepiece, blending elegance with a forward-thinking design, features an advanced adaptation of URWERK’s revolving satellite complication. The three-armed carousel showcases four-hour numerals that scroll along a 120-degree section, clearly displaying the current hour.
Featuring a unique trapezoidal shape, an extended face toward 6 o’clock, and thoughtfully-designed angles, this watch preserves URWERK’s signature style. It comes with a white ceramic casing, contrasted by a black DLC titanium caseback, and a durable rubber strap derived from vulcanization process.
The UR-230 Polaris watch retails for approximately 169,008 USD or 150,000 Swiss Francs. To learn about its current availability, visit the official URWERK website.
