Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Adewale O. Adeyemo urges Congress to provide the government with effective instruments for combating illicit financing associated with cryptocurrencies.
During a Senate hearing, Adeyemo shared that terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda have utilized cryptocurrencies for money laundering through social media channels, bringing up an instance from half a decade ago as evidence.
Adeyemo mentioned that they have been progressively discovering methods to conceal their identities and transfer funds anonymously through digital currencies.
Adeyemo brought up the issue of Russia utilizing stablecoins to bypass sanctions. As a reaction, bipartisan senators suggested broadening the scope of Treasury sanctions to include organizations such as Hamas and strengthening the agency’s cryptocurrency monitoring capabilities.
The Treasury is pushing for changes, such as providing additional tools for imposing sanctions on second parties and dealing with cryptocurrency threats in offshore locations. Although significant strides have been made in monitoring conventional finance, Adeyemo underscored the increasing attraction of digital assets for illicit activities without adequate new measures.
It’s important that Congress provides the U.S. Treasury Department with the required resources to fight financial crimes linked to cryptocurrencies. This action becomes essential in mitigating the danger posed by terrorist organizations and renegade nations, such as Russia, to our national security.
