- Cloud gaming service Utomik is set to shut its doors a mere three years after launch
- It represents another major move in the arms race for cloud gaming
- Only 6% of players are seemingly on-board with the tech
Utomik, a popular cloud-based gaming subscription service, has announced it’s closing down. Launched in 2022, Utomik initially rode a wave of cloud excitement, but that enthusiasm seems to have waned. As a result, the service is no longer operational starting today.
Cloud gaming, a relatively new concept that lets you play popular games through internet streaming, has been and continues to be a subject of intense discussion. The immediate release of leading titles onto their platforms has instigated debates about its impact on sales and overall influence within the gaming sector at large.
Worldwide, the response from players regarding cloud gaming services has been somewhat divided, as only 6% of gamers held a subscription in the year 2023. Despite forecasts predicting significant growth by 2030, Utomik’s shutdown underscores that success is not guaranteed.
Not a poor man’s game
As a loyal enthusiast, I must admit it’s easy to dismiss cloud gaming as a passing trend, given the initial buzz surrounding it. However, it’s important not to jump to conclusions too quickly. What sets Utomik apart from other players in this field is their unique position as a third-party company, unlike giants like Nvidia, Xbox, and PlayStation who have vast libraries of top-tier releases at their fingertips. This means that while they may seem to trail behind in terms of immediate access to the latest releases, Utomik offers something distinct, which I believe deserves a fair chance to prove its worth.
Now that Xbox Cloud Gaming enables playing games from your library which aren’t typically offered on the platform, it appears that the concept of cloud gaming has become an integral part of the ongoing competition among console manufacturers.
