Over the Valentine’s Day weekend, it was simply delightful for movie enthusiasts like me to snuggle up on the couch with my beloved one and indulge in some heartwarming cinema via streaming. Among Netflix’s top picks for February are timeless romantic comedies such as “13 Going on 30” and “Notting Hill”. Additionally, a fresh, original rom-com titled “La Dolce Villa” has just been unveiled, which is currently creating quite a stir among viewers in the U.S. However, if you’re seeking a Valentine’s Day release that’s also worth your time, I’d recommend giving Amazon’s latest offering a watch as well.
It seems that romantic comedies such as “Eat Pray Love,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” and “Roman Holiday” have shown us one thing – Italy provides an ideal setting for these types of films. The upcoming Netflix movie “La Dolce Villa,” which has been at the top of the streamer’s list of most popular movies in the U.S. since February 18th, is a testament to this fact. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has received favorable reviews from four out of seven critics, who labeled it as “Fresh,” and it also boasts an audience rating of 61%.
Under the guidance of director Mark Waters, known for Freaky Friday, the upcoming romantic comedy unfolds with Scott Foley from Felicity playing a father who makes every effort to prevent his daughter from finalizing a “One Euro House” arrangement. While in Italy, he unexpectedly finds himself growing fond not only of the town but also its charming mayor.
On numerous occasions, this popular streaming service has seen success with original romantic comedies. For instance, as recent as last May, a film titled “Mother of the Bride,” directed by Mark Waters, topped charts worldwide. Following that, in August, “Find Me Falling” garnered significant attention on the platform. Lastly, in October, “Lonely Planet” was a global sensation.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but recommend adding “La Dolce Villa” to your must-watch list on Netflix, among the latest streaming releases. However, if you’re looking for something different on Amazon, don’t miss out on “My Fault: London,” which has taken the number one spot! This romantic drama unfolds the complexities arising from a teenage girl’s infatuation with her attractive stepbrother, making it a compelling watch this Valentine’s Weekend.
In simple terms, the film titled “My Fault,” released on Amazon Prime in 2023 (Spanish version), is set in London and explores a complex romantic attraction between two characters, accompanied by the high-drama that ensues. This movie was the most watched Amazon Prime movie in 2023 and remained in the top 4 the following year. Given its popularity, it’s likely subscribers are eager to experience the charm of its English remake as well.
It’s important to note that Prime Video subscribers have a definite advantage over La Dolce Villa in terms of popularity, as its rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 89%. This is quite a remarkable feat given the discerning nature of today’s viewers.
Even though both “La Dolce Villa” and “My Fault: London” are rom-coms, it’s not necessary to compare them as they each offer unique charm. In fact, it’s fortunate for us that we have two such successful romantic comedies entertaining audiences right now. Both filmmaking teams can take pride in the positive reception their films have received. As a fan of this genre, I look forward to seeing more romantic comedies find success on streaming platforms throughout the rest of the year.
