Valerie Bertinelli candidly discusses her challenges in Hollywood during her time on the show “One Day at a Time“.
Starting out as a child actor in the entertainment world, Bertinelli quickly rose to fame when she became part of the CBS sitcom at just 15 years old. Living under the public eye wasn’t simple, but the twice-honored Golden Globe recipient confided that she sought advice from her “on-screen mother,” the late Bonnie Franklin, during difficult times.
She shared that it wasn’t until her 20th birthday that she visited Bonnie, and confided in her, ‘I’m having difficulties.'” (During a Wednesday episode of The Drew Barrymore Show)
Franklin expressed concern to Bertinelli that she appeared to be facing difficulties, and advised her to consult with mental health professionals for assistance. “She directed me to a psychiatrist, she directed me to a counselor – my mom on television,” she further explained.
In the television show titled “One Day at a Time,” Franklin took on the character of Ann Romano, a single mother with two daughters: Barbara (portrayed by Bertinelli) and Julie, played by Mackenzie Phillips. This series spanned almost a decade, and Franklin received an Emmy nomination for her performance as Ann in 1982.
During the conversation, Bertinelli shared memories of her time as a young actor, which was brought up when Drew Barrymore mentioned that Ariana Grande has been advocating for therapy provisions in contracts for emerging talents. Notably, the star of “Wicked” spent much of her life under public scrutiny, gaining recognition following her role on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious,” before reaching immense fame with her 2013 song “The Way.
Months ago, Grande expressed her wish for future contracts of child stars to mandate regular therapy sessions and a strong support system. She shared this idea in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
In February, Grande expressed thoughts on safety measures she believes are necessary. She imagines a scenario where entering the entertainment industry is contingent upon therapy being included in contracts, be it with record labels or production companies.
As a fellow gamer, I wholeheartedly agree with Ariana’s thoughts. She’s totally nailed it! I believe that gamers, like all people, deserve support and understanding, and I stand with her on this.
