As a passionate admirer of contemporary art, I have been captivated by the breathtaking exhibition “This is How the Light Gets In” by Vanessa Raw at the Rubell Museum in Miami. Having spent over a decade as an athlete myself, I find a unique synergy between Raw’s artistic journey and my own experiences, particularly as she masterfully merges the worlds of art and athleticism on her canvases.
Vanessa Raw’s recent exhibition titled “This is How the Light Gets In” at the Rubell Museum in Miami represents several firsts for this English painter. This is her inaugural US solo and institutional show, which introduces a fresh take on gender politics. By weaving together her unique interpretation of Eden, she advances this new perspective. The exhibition extends previous investigations into femininity and desire, inviting viewers to step into her world of sensual dreams.
Through a series of artworks created for the museum’s artist-in-residence program, Raw introduces an array of women, serenely reclining amid sunlit settings, vividly portrayed through rich hues. The artist crafts an “earthly paradise” where these figures harmoniously blend with their surroundings and each other.
As an artist painting women, I find myself crafting pieces that resonate deeply with a feminine perspective. The intricate layers of flesh in my paintings transcend traditional notions of sexuality, delving into realms of vulnerability and innocence instead. In a conversation with Destinee Ross-Sutton for CULTURED, I expressed that my work is inherently designed for a female gaze.
For more than a decade, being an Olympic triathlete has shaped Raw’s artistic style. On his canvases, art and athleticism intertwine beautifully. As figures merge and bleed into each other, a sense of meditation arises. Immersed in the vibrant energy of community and the stunning scenery that surround them, the artist develops a unique perspective where gentleness is equated with strength.
This is How the Light Gets In is now on view at the Rubell Museum in Miami.
